COVID-19 Pandemic Thread [NY Now Closes All Biz]

Yeah, it’s been a pain in the ass. If it wasn’t going to be so difficult to cancel everything, we probably would have pushed it back. Our worst case right now is if it does have to cancel, we have a local wedding here or in the ADK for an extended weekend, then just do the same trip but as a honeymoon instead. At least then the other half of Glacier, the better half and bigger mountain/nature side, would be open. Sucks! All the photos you see of Glacier when you goggle are all the Eastern side. lol
But yeah, the last month has been a shit show.

Canadians are so scared they’re going after their own, lol:

Ontario Provincial Police say a Canadian in the town of Huntsville filed a complaint after two men allegedly accosted him over his Florida licence plate.

I was just told of this last night.

Apotex is the only producer of HCQ in Canada. This is the company whose founders were brutally murdered in their own home a couple years back with no one charged and the home demolished with all of the evidence still inside.

It’s absolutely fucking disgusting how every ounce of evidence that this drug works is being censored in the media and on the internet. Friend of a friend (hearsay of course) was treated with it and started getting better within 2 days.

Yeah, I was wondering what the status of it in Canada was but this didn’t make me feel better.

I only have this one link to an hcq study:

Data is from March through May 2020.

https://www.ijidonline.com/article/S1201-9712(20)30534-8/fulltext

Quote:

Hydroxychloroquine provided a 66% hazard ratio reduction, and hydroxychloroquine + azithromycin 71% compared to neither treatment (p < 0.001).

Do you guys have other studies?

Glad to see Doug and Arne get it back considering the only reason their record got broken was because of the pandemic.

The ultimate challenge will be doing it in less than a day.

any of you dudes with elementary school aged kiddos in a position to share whats going on in the public schools over there?

I absolutely hate this state and this f**king Governor. How in the hell do you remove Arizona from the 14 day quarantine list of states traveling back from, yet I have a problem with North Dakota and South Dakota. This is a map of cases per 100,000 people. Arizona is towards the top of the list.

South Dakota has about 200 new cases per day while places like Michigan have 700-800 per day and Michigan has been off the list.

I’m a HS teacher but also the department chair, it’s a total cluster fuck man.

Most schools are going back remote, using either Microsoft Teams or Google Classroom. The plan is the role out the hybrid model (some days online, some days in person, limited student contact, etc) at the beginning of October but I really do not see that being a viable or practical plan being that it’ll be approaching flu season and the overlap of illnesses are going to compound the covid cases.

Last year of middle school not elementary for my daughter, but it’s basically the same.

Williamsville is going back hybrid. Split the school population in half by last name and 1/2 goes for in person Mon/Tues, everyone is remote with take home packets Wed (so the school can be cleaned, and teachers get a development day), then the other half goes in person Thurs/Fri. The difference between elementary and middle/high is on the remote days when the other half is in person the middle/high are supposed to be logging in to a webcam feed of the class and attendance is going to be taken. They’ll take part in the same class, just via webcam. Elementary was going to be the same but the parents complained so those kids will just be given work to do at home when the parents have time to help. I think that’s probably the best option right now because I can’t picture the webcam thing working for elementary for any parents that have jobs, even work from home jobs.

Of course the unknown right now is what the teachers union is going to do and if they’re going to have so many teachers bitch that “they don’t feel safe” and refuse to come back. The superintendent has already said that would be the only reason they would switch to 100% remote between now and school re-opening in less than 2 weeks. He also very publicly released the polls of the district parents and the results were about 80% of parents wanted kids going back either hybrid or 5 days a week vs only 20% wanting 5 days virtual. I know that was a calculated move releasing those results to put pressure on the union and school board to show them a reckoning will be coming at the next vote should they fail to get kids back in schools. He also said 5 days a week simply wasn’t possible with the state’s social distancing requirements.

As someone with an IT background I also foresee this school wide web simulcast failing spectacularly because the school network was never built to handle the bandwidth of streaming a live web feed from every class at the same time. Even if they use a service where the at home kids are logging into a non-school server that’s still a ton of upload bandwidth from every class just to get the teachers online. I asked some teachers I know and it seems like all they’ve done so far is small scale tests which don’t remotely reflect how hard they’re going to hit that network when the first class bell rings and every teacher starts their webcast.

Not sure how well this will upload, but it’s the letter my buddy got from his daughter’s expensive private college in Pittsburgh. Insane the BS they’re doing. He said a bunch of kids have already left and are demanding refunds for the semester.

Okay so basically it doesn’t seem like there is much benefit to leaving the country and moving to WNY temporarily to make sure my kids actually get educated.

My mom teaches in Buffalo Public Schools, LOL at getting any of those kids to do anything from home let alone in a classroom.

There are some private schools going 5 days in person because they have the small enough class sizes that they can still meet the distance requirements. As far as I know there are NO public schools in WNY going 100% in person because they just can’t meet the state requirements due to space constraints.

I know Buffalo public schools are going 100% remote because the union refuses to come back to the building, and that’s a school system where something like 20% of the kids don’t have internet at home.

how much are the private schools over there?

up here its $15k+ per kid per year for my kids’’ ages and it keeps going up from there. I have had friends with their kids in that school and they pulled them after 1 year.

i have heard that charter schools over there are much less expensive.

I haven’t even looked into it because I’m not going to screw up my kid’s life even worse than covid already has by ripping her away from all her friends (even if she’s in person with only 1/2 of them) her last year of middle school. Plus Williamsville is the best in WNY as of last year, and always in the top 3.

Our district is TINY. Under 100 kids per grade. My daughter is going into 11th, she has like 62 total which is probably the smallest.

K-5 are going back 5 days a week.

6-12 are doing M/T or Th/F in class , other 3 days are zoom classes. Wed to clean and for kids that need additional help (I think).

K-5 going 100% in person is huge for you guys. What district?
