where to start
top of cylinder only?
whole head, piston /rings?
just look at head gaskets?
ps reeds and cage look good and clean so does airbox and carb bowl/floats

pull the head and look at it. if nothing appears wrong then pull the cylinder off.
pulled the head-
piston is cracked off on around the outside
about a half inch then another real close to it about a 1/4 long-
so you can see the rings in those gaps around the diameter
ill assume the pieces went into the case- ill be draining that soon.
why do they crack???
they crack from excessive piston to cylinder play so the piston wobbles/rocks and breaks. basically it was worn the fuck out. and draining the cases will do nothing. the piston pieces will be in the crankcase, not the trannsmission they are seperate on two strokes… pull the motor out and flip it over. see if you can get them all out while flushing it out. otherwise your splitting the cases. i would check the clearances on the cylinder, a new piston may be loose too. might be time for an overbore
i just repaired a 02 rm250 with the same problem. it’s now a 265:boink
overbore:wackit:
well im thinking it was original so it wore the fuck out-1992 model
what do you check your clearances with??
would you care to take a look at /measure it?
im also looking for a good company kit to buy- or ebay/dennis kirk etc.
to make the blaster really rip i would put a 240 kit in it. you need to get the sleeve put in, i would get ahold of gino at vps for the machine work. probably under $300 for the 240 kit ready to go. for just a fresh top end build it’ll be about $125 w/bore give or take. you probably should rebuild the crank though because its probably ready to go too. see if you can move the rod up and down. i would rip the motor out and take it to gino if i was you, if you feel like doing it yourself then tear both side covers off and remove both the stator/flywheel and clutch assembly then take it somewhere for the crank work. if you don’t know what your doing its better to get it done right than you mess it up and wonder why it blows up during break-in. pistons are to be inspected and replaced every so many hours and will save the headache of a full break down/rebuild in the future…

vps is known for building good quad motors. i would suggest letting them go at it too. do it right the first time.
