I was just doing some research on a good rewards card in Canada. I’ve caught up on all my old debt and am now running everything I can through my Canadian Tire options card. In the past year I’ve redeemed around $100 in CT “money” but I want a card that has better cash rewards. I’m not interested in air miles, cash back on a statement is king.
I was looking at a travel card that would let you redeem points for cash back, but I havent picked which one to use yet. I’ll probably ditch my current card as it gets no use, the rewards are nothing compared to the Canadian Tire card.
Southwest card, paid in full monthly. Can’t ignore the travel miles living here in CA. I’ve had 3 round trip flights home already this year, just off points.
Anyone paying debit is a dummy. Depending on your lifestyle, there is always a good card for you.
my wife had a CT gas card but from what i could tell and from what @Happy240sx said (he worked on the CT cards at the time) their rewards were not that great compared to other cards.
i’d check with your bank and see what cards they offer. having the card with your bank makes auditing it easy since you see it every time you log into your account. that is a huge plus for me because i’m often not around when the mail comes. i miss the payment on my back up card a couple times a year since it’s attached to a different bank account and i am out of town when the mail comes.
TD has a 1% cash back card for $100 a year. But even if you prefer cash you can still do better with some of the rewards cards. You can turn the points into gift cards and christmas gifts and save more money than you would have earned at the cashback rate. we’re about to redo a couple bathrooms with toilets, vanities and bath units bought through gift cards acquired through rewards points.
Yeah, the gas rewards card isn’t that great. I use the Options card that gets me maximum CT “money” rewards when I pump gas @ CT and normal CT money on all other purchases. Its definitely not the best, but I redeemed more rewards in 1 year than I had accumulated on my other bank attached CC over the last 8 years.
I use a credit union for my banking and their rewards card doesn’t stack up against any of the other big cashback or rewards cards. I use a budgeting app that helps me keep track of balances in all of my accounts as well as due dates for recurring bills, so having it attached to online banking is no benefit personally.
I’m currently considering the Scotiabank Momentum Infinite Visa or the Capital One Aspire Travel Master Card (travel points can be redeemed at a rate for cash rewards). The latter has an annual points bonus that offsets the annual fee by about $75, making it the “lower fee” card of the two, but it only earns 2pts/dollar where the Visa earns 4% for Gas and Grocery, 2% on recurring bills, and only 1% for all other purchases.
I think between my wife and I we have 8 or 10 give or take. 2 are legacy ones that are getting paid off; the others are either the daily use card (Southwest) that gets paid off every month; or promotional 0% interest cards that get paid of 1 month before the deal expires. I think we have a Kohl’s card as well for the cash and discounts, but that’s another gets paid off every month. Plus a corporate card for my travel.
The Southwest card, we get typically 10-15 round trip tickets per year out of; we utilize it for a LOT of stuff, and have worked the system to get as many bonus points as we can; combined with Southwest being one of the company approved airlines…
My wife an I use one, and pay it off every month. A couple of store cards for her that get paid off whenever they get used, just so she gets the discount coupons and gift cards. I have a couple back ups with no fee that I use once a year so they stay active.
Can’t remember the rewards points structure, but it’s no fee and I’ve gotten far more out of the points than I’ve paid in interest or fees over the life of the card.
Yeah, that’s not really the case anymore. Every now and then I’ll run into a small mom and pop store that doesn’t take Amex but more places take it. I have a Visa as a backup just in case.
Traveling all over the US for the past two years using a corp amex I have only had 1 place not take it and it was at another credit card companies cafeteria
