Curb/Sidewalk/Driveway Replacement

did a little concrete demo and placement at the end of last week. i’ve been meaning to do the replacement for years but recently switched insurance companies and they told me i had to do it.

this is actually my old house that i have held onto as a rental for the past couple of years.

approximately 450sqft of concrete plus a curb. took around 7 yards of concrete.

strange mercury switch buried below the driveway. i figure it must have used to control either a door opener or some lights on the garage.

the concrete truck arrived late and threw off the whole schedule so we were power washing off the surface to expose the aggregate at 10pm…i’m sure a couple of my former neighbors didn’t appreciate that…but at least it was a friday night.

more pics to come once i get the joint cuts and sealing completed.

Good weather for curing anyway.

yeah it was not the optimal time to be doing this project but i was up against a hard deadline from the insurance company…apparently their brilliant underwriters aren’t so familiar with the finer points of concrete installation… i wish i had done it at the beginning of the week instead of the end. i ended up covering it all with plastic and some straw because it was pretty cold that first night and i didn’t want to risk it freezing and popping off all the exposed aggregate.

otherwise the next few days are going to be wet and cloudy so it should get a good long cure. hoping things clear up shortly thereafter though. i’m planning to keep the tenants off of it until i get it sealed to avoid the inevitable grease and oil off the cars…not sure how long they will respect the orange cone at the end of the driveway.

Those stairs look awesome! Seems like a cool old house or something, love the stairs and driveway/garage set up!

It is my experience that insurance companies rarely care about your problems.

yeah it is a great little place. part of me still wishes we lived there. i don’t really like to own it as a rental as renters tend not to be as gentle on it. i may try to sell it this summer or maybe next spring.

indeed.

Cool house.

Cool house, where is it located?

Insurance companies can be a bitch. That’s an interesting house, where is this rental located?

edit: ^ mank beat me to it

that house is awesome, love it

butler, pennsylvania

Wow, I’m pretty sure I noticed that awesome house when I was there last year. Is there a side road close by that is ridiculously steep, and someone built a newer house at the bottom that will eventually have a car slide into their living room some winter? If so, small world.

I need concrete for my driveway in the worst way. What is the going rate for a yard these days?

you usually wouldn’t come by this house going to anywhere else as the road it is on is a dead end…but there is a very steep short road off of it a little ways down…but there are a lot of steep roads around here. that said i don’t believe there is another house that looks like this one anywhere in town, so it just might have been it.

i got it for about $107/yard which included like an $8 premium for the colored aggregate and some up charge for winter heat. i had another price closer to $120 as well. my understanding is that it is a bit more expensive up in WNY

looking at those pictures I’m thinking this was done in the mid 1970s (because of the blur, saturation)… LOL

For removal and total replacement I have been getting estimates in the 4 to 4.50 per ft range

railing installed, joints cut and a coat of sealer in place. i need to seal it a couple of more times to get to the wet look i’m hoping for. the stuff is so porous it sucked up twice as much as the labelled coverage on the first coat.

That place looks so awesome! I’d love to own a house that looks that cool!
