Dash Lights Randomly Turning Off

Car - '96 Subaru Legacy Outback, 137k
Problem - Dash lights randomly turn off. If I switch my headlights off and then back on again, the dash will light back up again. No real pattern to the dash lights shutting down either.

Minor inconvenience, but I would love to know what the likely cause is so I can correct the problem.

Bad switch? Do the headlights stay on the whole time?

If you wiggle the dimmer switch can you recreate the problem?

Headlights remain functionable the whole time. Cannot recreate by playing with the dimmer either.
