My laptop’s HDD just crashed on the way back to Toronto and i have a lot of files on there that were important. I called up one place in Sauga that quoted me near $500 to get back 80-90% of my data.
I’m hoping someone here has any experience to refer me to a reputable and hopefully cheaper solution.
That’s the place i contacted. They gave me a rough quote of $500. They seem decent enough, but would like to check out my other options, if i have any that is.
I have about 5Gbs of pics from the UK, that i don’t want to lose and a bunch of CD’s and DVDs that i ripped while i was there.
Is it a hardware or software failure?
If you have more details on the nature of the failure I can give you a quote, otherwise if you don’t mind leaving your laptop with me for a day or two, I can have my tech guys look at it and come up with a solution and price.
dead laptop? is it only the HD not owkring or is it something else in the laptop ? ( ie other hardware parts in the laptop )
sometimes, the HD overheats and cauese problem w/ the hardware stuff surroudning it… you might want to try taking the HD out and testing it on an external case you can buy and plug it into a normal computer
mainly this thread is about a dead hard drive. hardware problem. not software. as far as i know only a handful of places specialize in data recovery on dead hds. its expensive to do and anyone who can offer a cheap alternative is what we’re lookin for.
Word. I think i got a hookup from a fellow SON member, and will try and take my laptop to him Wednesday. Got the flu too, so i’m hoping i feel better tomorrow to make the trip.
Getting another HDD for my laptop is another problem. The ones that Dell used are prone to jamming up.
I looked up the error code and got DST Short error - 1000 0146. Not much info about it online, and even Dell is useless. But i imagine it’s seaized up and the files haven’t been corrupted, so there is a greater chance of recovering all my files.
