Dish Network/DirecTV question...

I’m sick of the horrible, horrible cable company we’re stick with down here, looking to go dish.

They seem to have great content, lots of HD, and all that jive shit, but I can’t find anything about them carrying the main, broadcast stations (ABC, NBC, CBS).

What’s the deal with this?

kthx.

I have Dish Network. They are comparable with Direct TV, but you will pay more for HD service. It is $20 extra/month to have the HD…where Direct TV is $10/mo. If you want FSN then you have to go with the mid grade package (like $45/mo) if you want Versus then you have to go with the premium package (like $63/month). You can go on their site and see what channels are on each package. As for reception for the most part it is good, there are times during big storms I will loose the signal. Expect to pay extra per month for DVR too, but that is expected. That’s all I can think of off the top of my head.

I have had Dish at my house since we got it about 2 years ago and my parents have had it at their house for like 6 years or so. Neither of us have had any problems either. I had some issues with the installers but not with the actual provider. I upgraded to HD in November and I love it. I think I pay about 80 per month and I get the 250 channel package and I think I get 25 HD channels but they are always adding more. I also have the two tv DVR receiver which is awesome. If you have any specific questions feel free to PM me. Also, I never have any issues with reception in storms. We used to have the dish on our deck but when we upgraded to HD and got a new dish, I had them move it up to the roof and it still is working great.

FYI…
Dish is going through some upgrades now.

adding more HD channels…22 last week & more to come soon.

good & bad to it…they are removing possibly all of the Voom channels to make room to add more national HD channels.

I prefer Dish a little over Direct, but do to this decision to remove Voom they are about even to me now.

Dish/Direct > Fios > cable

I’ve had both over the years. Had a satellite dish for 13-14 years. I’ve switched back & forth, only to find that DirecTV seems to have the best programming, and better cust service. DirecTV’s on screen menus & channel lineup seem to make more sense when navigating. Dish Network’s ‘similar’ channels were scattered all over the place.

I do not have HD, but I understand that DirecTV has more HD channels than any of the cable or satellite providers. I plan on adding HD service (I called last night about upgrading to HD DVR & I want to stop at Best Buy/Circuit City today to exercise my options).

Just my .02 cents.

they both carry local in HD…if you have the HD package along with local you get the local in HD & standard def.
they both have the main stuff, ABC, CBS, NBC, Fox, but to get the others (only a few) you have to get an antenna, WB, PBS, etc…
Dish networks reciever accepts an antenna input & integrates the over the air channels you are pulling in with the dish channel so they are all visible in the guide.
i assume Direct does the same thing.

Mike… I have had Direct TV for the past 12 years or so… it has been nothing but great to us. I bet over the 12 years, it went out about 6 times… seems cable goes out more than DTV… regardless, you will get all of the local channels in HD if you have the HD package and I believe the local channels package ($6)… although I think they may have merged the local channels into their regular package, back in the day you had to pay the extra $4-$6 I think it was, you will have to check to make sure.

The good thing about Direct TV… you can have it at multipul locations by only paying $5 more a month for an additional receiver. PM me for this, im not posting it on here.

Also the HD package is only $10 more a month.

PM me with any questions… DTV FTW!

I’ve had direct tv for 2 years. I am pretty happy with them. But I’m switching to verizon fios tv in about 2 months.

FYI on fios…the HD lineup is still weak & their DVR sucks
but its still young & they have a lot of growing to do.

Have had dish since I bought my house in 2003, no issues and has gone out not even a handful of times. We have it at work as well and no issues.

they’re promising 150 hd channels by october. and the new dvr’s are coming in a couple months. same size hd, but the 7216 will have an active eSATA port for external HD hookups. I’m not sure what the size limit will be for the external HD.

when companies promise “100” or “150” channels…its not that your going to get 150 channels.

that total includes all the cites locals…so if they service 20 major cities & each gave 4 locals in HD through them…that takes up 80 of that 150.

usually in the end you get anywhere from 25-40 depending on the package you have…if you get movies channels etc…

also thats why i’m kinda pissed @ dish for dropping VOOM. the VOOM channels were 24/7 1080i HD, with limited commercials. yes some of the programming was repeated a lot, but id take it anyday over some of the shitty national broadcast “HS lite” channels that are upconvert & only broadcast HD some of the time.

screw dish, On demand >*

your crazy…cable sucks ass…picture quality sucks, over priced & HD selection is piss poor.

& as far as on demand…DVR > on demand…id rather control wants available @ anytime.
DVR = own personal on demand.

Comcast has DVR + on demand . so your argument is pointless.

HD on dish isn’t all that great either. only thing differs is price, because comcast has way more stuff

cocksuckers want like $500 up front to get going. :ugh2:

thats one of the most uninformed comments ive her in a while
wake up…comcast doesn’t hold a candle to dish/direct or Fios.

i’ve had eveything but fios, & the pciture quality on comcast is the worst.
HD quality & quantity are better with dish/direct…period

Did you try haggling with them at all? They gave me free installation 2 years ago because i was a new customer and then they kept cancelling my installations or sending incompetent installers so I had multiple visits and they tried to charge me. I refused to pay and told them that it was their own fault and they actually ended up giving me like 50 bucks or something.

Then when we upgraded from regular to HD we paid like $185 for installation and equipment but we got a rebate for the full amount. Try and call back again and see if you can work something out. Never hurts to ask for the representative’s manager too. Good luck.

I just went on their website. :dunno:

Give them a call and see what they have to say. Just mention that you had heard about install specials and if they want your business you will have to get some kind of deal. I have had that work multiple times with different subscriptions services (like XM radio and stuff).
