This thread is semi-on going as i have a few more things to do to complete. Since i bought the place this past June, i put in new flooring and all new appliances and painted the formally yellow walls. The big change was definently the cabinets. Hoping i can find my pics from moving in so I can show the complete change. Since this will be a rental, i was budget watchful.
The new cabinets are an expresso (Brown/Black) oak and all the drawers and cabinets are soft close.
I cringe now when i see the old cabinetry:
Out with the old (threw a much needed extra coat of paint on at this point):
Assembling the new cabinets:
for those who recall my built-in coffee maker thread…i went with a built in wine cabinet instead. I’ll replace the fridge with a counter-depth when i rent… but for now the wife doesn’t want to give up the 28cu-ft of goodness:
Cant wait for the new countertops:
finishing touches to come:
I really like the overall look. DEFINENTLY suits my style.
I still need to install:
-hardware on the glass cabinets
-crown molding
-lighting
-backsplash
-custom countertops (new thread on that one)
UPDATE:
Concrete countertops installed, backsplash and undercabinet lighting installed and much needed new wall colors.
Awesome job as always Josh. It looks really good and is completely your style. This isn’t something I would ever choose for a style in my own kitchen. I like the feel of warmer woods. The black with dark blue walls and frosted glass is just to cold for my tastes.
Yeah, i think i just need to get some stuff out of my system before i build my home. I will be warming the overall look up a bit with the backsplash and countertops. I was originally thinking of doing a one piece glass backsplash in a bold color…but have been leaning towards stone.
I like the cabinets, but with the wall color, it now makes it too dark for my tastes, but it does look good. Was going to comment on the counter tops, but I see that is an up coming project, so I will wait to see what you have planned. What is the unit in the cabinets to the left of the fridge? Wine cooler or in-cabinet coffee maker?
I think once i get all the lighting installed and the backsplash, it will make a big difference in the overall “darkness”, something i had in mind when i painted this color. And yeah, you can see the countertops are just temporary… look at the hole for the sink.
I went with a built in wine cooler… it was a nice touch. seen a bit better here:
haha…noted. I really think the finishing touches will be what make all the differences. I may have been a bit premature in posting this thread, but i was bored.
Yep and Yep! Plus…with what research i did…the style and feel i’m targeting for this place is geared towards a yupee bachelor. It’s been hard making some decisions knowing i have kids and tastes that are slightly different then what i purchase. If it were a place i planned on staying in for more than a year i would have went the extra mile.
I was actually really suprised with the quality of the finish and hardware. When i checked them out, i wasn’t expecting much. All the drawers and doors have dampers for soft close. The drawers are all extruded aluminum with great fit/finish. Easy adjustabilty to fine tune everything so the faces can line up properly. What’s really nice is that IKEA has tons of accessories that have a perfect fit designed to go with all of their stuff. I checked them out in the store just to take a look with minimal expectations. Factoring in this being a rental i didn’t want to spend $15K+ on cabintes. Everything complete was $4K and i got a discount for paying with a debit card. All that and they have a decent 20 year warranty.
if i really wanted to change the look again, all of the faces are interchangable and would probably cost about $1K.

Very industrial. I like the colors and finishes but yeah, she’s a wee bit chilly inside. Definitely would like to see what you’ve got so far as finishing touches go though.
