DIY Network and HGTV, here I come! (Season Premier April 23rd 10/9c)

I wasn’t planning on posting anything about this here…but then I realized the value this site (NYSPEED and formally UBRF) had in my life. Many of you on here probably don’t know me well or never heard of me, but I was apart this community back in its humble beginnings. Some of you may know that i’m kind of a DIY’er. As a result of all of my automotive DIY projects over the years I’ve been able to develop a skillset that allowed me to use in my career today. Posting DIY project here drove me to do a lot of things i wouldn’t have otherwise done that pushed my limits and was a HUGE learning experience. (i.e. cutting the roof off my BMW, that infamous use for the 10ft Carbon Fiber pole, powdercoating, welding, metal fabrication, fiberglass/CF molding, etc)

I’m still doing a lot fun little side projects and continue trying to learn new ways of getting my hands dirty… but 2 years ago I decided to retire my engineering-slave-to-the-man career and venture out on my own. I’ve started building a lot of cool crap utilizing concrete as a primary(but not limited to) building material. Trying to be innovative and push the boundaries with a somewhat primitive material that’s typically thought of as cold and clunky.

I’ve been amazed with how much I have taught myself and learned through this community and how these skills play into what I do every day now. The biggest experiences dealing with forming materials used for mold fabrication.

On that note, my DIY-ness is finally making fittingly to the DIY Network this month on “The Vanilla Ice Project” show. For those that don’t know, Rob (AKA Vanilla Ice) buys foreclosed mansions and through out the show’s season renovates a different area of the home with his unique style.

A few months ago I received a call from Rob to build an outdoor bar for the latest rennovaton. We met up and once he saw what I was capable of, my scope quickly expanded to other areas. He thought my craft was so cool that he and the crew came to my studio and did a bunch of filming. My initially small portion of the renovation quickly turned into the centerpiece of the entire build. We fabricated a custom walk-in bath tub and a 13ft long vanity top with custom ambient lighting as well as an outdoor bartop…all out of concrete!

As a result of the experience, I strategically brought Rob on as a design partner and we’ll continue to work together on designs for my Business. So, needlessly to say it’ll be interesting to see where this all goes. In an amazing way I feel a lot of where I am today came from the drive of building stuff to share here on NYSPEED (and UBRF)

So if you get a chance, check out Season 6 of “The Vanilla Ice Project” which premieres April 23rd 10/9c.
The sad thing is…I have NO IDEA how much exposure i’ll get. It may be 2secs, maybe 10 minutes… may be none at all (but I doubt it). The episode with the Master Bath renovation will be my biggest opportunity. We’ll see!

Here’s a sneak peek of some of things you might see if you choose to tune in…

Good for you Josh…never thought I’d see the day where you would be working with Vanilla Ice, haha, but happy for you that things are well…

That’s awesome!

Congrats on the additional exposure.

That’s bizarre, and cool at the same time. Yeah, I’ve seen the show here and there, but will keep an eye on it now

Damn congrats! Every time someone asks me where I got the idea of my concrete counters and furniture I tell them your story.

So you stopped collaborated and listened.
