In all honesty I prefer DLP and Sony’s top line rear projection (rest in peace) to the others. But most of all I despise Plasma… It’s only reason for existing is because they couldn’t make LCD’s that big at the time. But that’s another story.
As far as that being a good price, I think you could do better. Especially catching a promotion at Best Buy. But I would say stick with Samsung on those. They have very reliable image and color quality. The only ones I have liked better are Sony’s and by a small margin.
I like LCD’s (flat panel), but I feel they are too noisy most of the time. DLP’s have all the sharpness but arn’t as harsh with the pixel pitch concerns of LCD’s. Watching a Blu-Ray on a 180p LCD left a lot of artifacting in high action sceens on the top of the line Samsung’s, LG’s, Sharp’s, and Sony’s. I think the problem is that at 1080P it doesn’t push the noise filtering as well as it does at the lower resolution inputs.
With a DLP there is none of the shimmering effect or the ‘screen door’ effect that LCD projection had. Lower resolution inputs also look a lot smoother on a quality DLP.
Having said that about LCD’s, probably some of the best TV’s on the market right now are the 120hz LCD panels from Samsung. But they tend to be fairly pricey. Though there is a sale at Newegg right now for a 52" 120hz LCD for $2400 with free shipping and no taxes.
Def watch best buy for deals. I got my mitsubishi 65in DLP fromt there for 1800.
Dont worry that mess is cleaned up. It was the first day i got it, and had to wait for direct tv to come in. Now it has all wiring hidden as well as a new stand.
I paid 999 plus tax for a Sharp 46" LCD 1080p shipped to my house (7500:1 Contrast ratio 5ms response time) . My Samsung DLP just like the one in the ad has a better picture head on. But from any side viewing angle my DLP sucks. If you are going to just be sitting in front of the TV get the DLP but I would look around a bit. They can be had MUCH cheaper. If you plan on having guests over, avoid any projection TV.
Side to side the viewing angles on DLPs are not bad. But if you are standing and looking down on one or laying on the floor and looking up, the view can suck.
Also, if I were going to buy a DLP, I’d seriously look into LED DLP. The life of an LED is many times more than a standard DLP bulb. I’m not sure what kind of power they are running through the LEDs but a typical LED can last tens of thousands of hours easily. EDIT (20,000 hours)
Ughh I personally cannot stand DLP displays, nor can could i deal with Samsungs reliability issues.
You get what you pay for, A 46 W series from sony goes for about 2000, you get 120 hz, all there bells and whistles, its basically last years XBR, when it comes down to it.
Dont count LG out either the new 70 series is a great panel, and LG has a line of plasmas too.
If anyone is confused by my comments of plasma. (I’m guessing that was sarcasm earlier)
Plasma Cons:
Horrible color reproduction
Glare galore
None a one has a true black, usually gray or green
The brightness is over the top (connected with the color reproduction)
Pros
Contrast ratos
Good for well lit rooms (unless that well lit part is in front of the TV, its will glare like crazy)
show me some sort of documentation on how LCD’s as a whole produce more accurate colors than plasmas as a whole. with the AR filters in most of the better plasmas, the glare isn’t bad unless there is DIRECT sunlight, and it’s certainly better than the LCD’s with the high gloss screens.
You kiss Sony’s ass and rag on Samsung for reliability??? That’s laughable.
I’ve had several Samsung electronics and not a single problem with them. Sony on the other hand…
