Do Students Deserve a Bailout?

Did your parents ever start a college fund? Did they take a chunk of their income and put at least SOME away for you? Maybe if they financed their cars smartly, they could have helped you out some.

If they started when you were born, and put in 50/month you get this:

50 * 12 = $600 per year saved

600 * 17 = $10,200 saved by the time you are 17 years old.

I would say that it’s MORE than fair for them to set aside $50/month. That is the same amount of the average cell phone bill. That $10k would have helped you a lot, and hurt them only a little bit(I would think). Maybe they couldn’t pay for ALL of your schooling, but they should be able to help a little.

Its cool that you’re planning on doing for them what your folks did for you.

they got married when they were 20 it really wasn’t at the top of their to do list lol but yeah you’re right it would have been nice and i will do that for mine and help them at least partially… sorry my rant got out of control guys

I plan on doing the same thing for my kids. My parents never made a “fund” but they took 30k+ from their savings account to pay my first year. Actually they were smart, they charged the whole bill on their gm card and their rewards card. This got them lots of money back toward their new car, and gave them a trip to vegas. They just charged it, and when the bill came in they paid it off.

Im really surprised not one person has touched on the cost of education now-a-days. Maybe thats what so much of this “bailout” is driven by.

As a SUNY student, I really cant complain because I feel the SUNY system is one of the only things our state does right, but lets face it, so many colleges around the world are becoming businesses just as much as they are educators. And please please please dont even get me started on the textbook companies.

Im not saying we deserve these “bailouts” its just something to think about, are tuition rates fair?

Let’s back up for one moment. Your schooling IS paid for. If you want more than grade 12 YOU pay for it. I mean where does it end? I know people that would go to school their entire life if someone else would pay. And this is why you little shits scare me, it is like you are born with your hand out. The sense of entitlement has crippled this country already. I’m done.

are tuition rates fair?

that is a whole-nother can of worms

however, I DO think that private schools take advantage.

Also, I would know. I work at Duke University. Money isn’t an object to these parents though.

What could you buy with $50 in 1980 vs. 2009?

What opportunities does a HS Diploma get you now-a-days? Neither of my parents have 4 year college degrees. They didn’t need them when they were job hunting.

However, now, it is difficult to get a job/advance your salary without at least a 4 year degree.

Depends on the industry…

If you work hard and are motivated you could easily move up and make good money in IT with out a degree.

It’s all relative brother.

If you were born in 1980, you would have went to college around 1997. Tuition rates were lower in the late 90s than they are now. So maybe you could have saved less/month, and still helped out just as much.

We’re not exactly talking about the 60s and 70s here. Most of us were born in the Mid-80s.

Stop making excuses for your parents and for yourself. Even if you cut that 50 in half, you would save $5k. That is enough to AT LEAST cover books.

Such is life. Most of the time, you get what you pay for.
If its cheap, you will need to invest some effort to turn it into something of value.

I understand where you are coming from LZ, but I can assure you it is likely to be much easier with a 4 year degree than without.

In MOST cases, a 4 year degree is necessary to be competitive and to open up opportunities.

Yes 4 year degree opens a lot of doors…since a bunch of HR departments are still old school and will toss resumes with out a 4 year.

right, and all I am saying is that parents owe it to their kids to help them open doors, at least a little bit.

I do not have a 4 year degree, I just got a 10K raise. I will be getting my degree and taking a totally diferent position in two years as part of that deal, but it is possible to get a job sans degree. You just have to be a standout employee if you want to beat the guys that have one. I work 2x harder than anyone else in my office, and it does not go unnoticed.

You do however need a 4 year degree to move an internet forum without it being down for 2-3 days.

Please don’t ban me.

Well thats so much of it as well.

If your parents can outright afford these $20k a year schools, more power to them… but I absolutely hate it when I see friends of mine (who I considered greatly smarter than me in HS) paying loans out the ass at St. Bonaventure for 4 years only to obtain a communications degree and ending up working at Geico.

Another thing people neglected to mention is the old “I just got my Medical Degree and have $150k in loans… time to file for bankruptcy” scheme lol. I know thats harder to do now-a-days per new bankruptcy laws but still lol, what about that form of “bailout” lol.

Banks didn’t ruin the economy it was the iresponsible consumers living above their means.

If they are going to put bailouts on student loans, I dont think they should forgive the students that like to get every dime possible and then a buy a 70k vette :banghead:

I’m glad I didn’t sucked into college debt, it really puts a hurting on poeple

WTF…you calling me old? 1976 here SON! :stuck_out_tongue:

I have said this for years…I feel if you can’t afford to put your kid through college you didn’t plan properly. It’s a planning and responsibility thing IMO.
Same with retirement for that matter…I don’t have sympathy for those that were near retirement and kept their nest egg in high risk shit. Protect ya neck yo! WU TANG
