I had to replace the ECU in my girlfriend’s '05 Hyundai. I got one for $45 and everything works perfectly, but the VIN doesn’t match.
I spoke to the local Hyundai dealerships and none of them were very helpful. They do have a reprogramming service, but from speaking with them and doing some research it appears that the VIN can’t be changed on a used ECU. Only one that is new or freshly remanufactured. I haven’t found one of those for less than $495+core.
I don’t know how much the NYS DMV/Inspection computer system has changed over the years. I called that place, NYS Inspections Plus, and asked this question. The guy said that it is automatic failure and there is no way around it, because it’s all in the computer and sent to NYS.
But I’ve heard some people say the opposite.
Does anybody have any direct experience with this?
+1. People swap entire drivetrain’s in subaru’s including harness and ECU and still pass the plugin. With that said, Subaru doesnt have the VIN in the ECU (at least pre-07), so I cant imagine a non-matching one would matter.
yeah but it makes me feel all warm and fuzzy inside when other people ask it and get the same answer. I’m going to get it inspected in the next few weeks
First of all having the VIN in the PCM wasn’t a requirement until 2008 IIRC
CAN bus is also required on 2008+
I’m also sure the older NYS inspection machines pulled the VIN PCM because dealerships and other places were getting caught plugging in other cars and entering in another cars VIN.
However you’re not even trying to do anything illegal PCM went bad and you’re replacing it.
