doesnt make sense to me.

im at 73-74kmi, you think i should do this one time on my next oil change just to see about the wear and tear on my motor and such? like, for general interest? or just not worth the time and money for a daily?

If you find it interesting and fun, sure…necessary, certainly not.
I do not use it as a guide… I like to scientifically look at differences between oils and make comparisons…and I have done it off and on alot, starting with the turbo motors. My initial goal was to see if synthetic or dyno oil had much wear difference in the Gen 3 motors.

im just curious to see about the shape of the motor, thats all. i dont want to pull it and take it apart to look. ya know what i mean? it doesnt seem expensive, plus it’d be a one time thing, so i think ill do it just cuz. it wont hurt, right?

Sounds like your encouraged enough to do it… give it a shot.

in 10kmi i shall :smile
i dont beat on that motor, but id still like to do this for diagnostic purposes. kinda like preventative maintenance or something. ill need to check all the other fluids. wouldnt wana blow up my tranny

Beating on the motor has little to do with the longevity of the oil. It actually performs worse when it doesnt get up to temperature, meaning a lot of traffic or sitting at idle.

I tested every oil thats ever been in the white car to determine what’s best and was pretty surprised at what I got.

Now I test it after almost every long track event to see when it needs to be changed and just to monitor what goes on in the motor. My buddy found out that he had a chip out of his valve by getting an oil analysis done and checking which metal particles they found it. Cool stuff.

I could use a top quality oil all season long in my race motor. They’ve never said it needs to be changed. Lately the motor gets rebuilt long before it needs an oil change.

i see. well, from looking at my gauges(which i do all the damn time for some reason) i see the temperature sitting at the same spot. it went up by about 25-50 degrees one time in the summer, but its hovering in the same range all the time when i drive. so guess its all right? i think its like around 200. im not 100% sure right now, but ill take a look at it on my way back home and post it if i remember.

Water temp or oil temp?

Stock gauges are great for old ladies. They are weighted, so they basically stay in the same spot. In actuality, the temps fluctuate constantly. Range is anywhere from 5-40 degrees under normal driving conditions. Water temps can be controlled with the thermostat, oil temps are at the will of however much heat you put into the motor.

Most motors and oils are designed to be driven on the street in normal conditions, but if you let your car warm up for 30 minutes every day in the winter, you’ll get accelerated contamination. My DD winter oil tests are funkier in the winter than in the summer. The Blackstone guys say its for this reason.

It’s worth doing just because it’s a really cool analysis (and I’m a car nerd). It’s ACTUALLY worth doing if you have a modded motor that gets run hard.

my coolant temp gauge actually has no numbers. its cold l l l l l l l l l l hot. thats all. the oil temp gauge has numbers on it. mine runs like 170-200 range, i think, but dont quote me on that, like i said i dont remember right now and ill need to look at it when i drive it back home later today. i thought about getting a couple of other gauges, but its not really a sports car, so i dont really NEED them, right? EGT, Oil pressure are the two that come to mind when i think of others i could get that MAY prove usefull. i can fit three over my deck. thats all the room i have there, unless i put them over my steering wheel. there is no way im doing anything on the dash itself(not putting holes in it) or on the pillars(if the airbags deploy in a crash the gauges become projectiles aimed at my skull). i think ill just keep the boost gauge for now and relocate the timer display next to it once i finish the panel and lead out the deck input RCA’s into that panel so its nice and neat there. also, ive got some questions about the voltage on my O2 sensor that the turbo timer displays. if you could explain that mess to me, id be greatfull.

There are hundreds of thousands of A6s driving around without gauges. You dont need any of them.

Besides, your Audi will break down whether you monitor everything or not. heh heh heh

:lol point taken. so can u tell me about the voltage?

What about it?

well, in the warmer weather it’d be just under 2 volts when i start the car and climb up to around 2, now it starts at 4 and drops to about 3 when its warmed up. sometimes it sticks to the same number for a while and sometimes it varies. it doesnt seem like its got a constant update speed to it(i.e system load manager display on your computer) i just dont get how it works. i THINK around 2 somewhere is stoich, but i can be WAAAAAAY the hell wrong.

Rather high voltage readings for an O2 sensor from what I know

thats why im asking for somebody to explain that to me. i dont know what its supposed to be. i see the little chart thingie in the manual, and around 2 looks to be stoich, but thats about all i can deduce

your car has 2 egt sensors stock. if EGT’s get too high, the ECU pulls timing and will put it into a limp mode. and your CEL will come on, probably flashing at you…your o2’s are narrowband as well so dont trust what they say

the pillar airbags go across the windsheild not out towars you, and the apillars dont go flying, companies like 42 draft design sell pillar pods in factory correct upholstery to match your interior.

kool. ill check out their pods. im thinking i dont really need egt gauges. do u know about the o2 voltage? i know i have narrowband and i dont need to upgrade to wideband really. is it bad that it starts off at4? i mean, its always doing it in cold weather.

You might reconsider that when you realize the resolution of the NB02 compared to WB02.

yea, but u need a wideband of a lot of finetuning on race cars. like ur 3kgt, mines a daily. i doubt ill actually NEED that. yea, i could get it, but i doubt ill be taking 100% advantage of everything it offers

yeah but you could totally have an epic gauge that says all sorts of numbers
