Dog got loose

My friend’s dog got loose and they were wondering if it it gets picked up by someone where would it end up? SPCA? Humane Society?

Of course there is the possibility they will just keep it too. She already put a ad in the paper and craigslist.

I feel like info/pic of said dog would help in the search. The dog could feasibly be anywhere.

^^ i figured that much… She said it got loose once before but came home after a few hours. This time it was gone overnight.

In my experience, shelters are pretty good at calling and letting you know if a dog comes in matching the description you give them. Unfortunately, when my dog went missing for a few days, there were 2 other dogs in the neighborhood that looked similar and had a habit of regularly getting out to roam the streets so I had a lot of false leads from the shelters for a while.

I posted TONS of fliers EVERYWHERE with pictures. Eventually, a guy a few blocks away called and said he had our dog. He was on his way to the grocery store to post his own “FOUND” fliers and buy some dog food, and saw all my “MISSING” posters on every single telephone pole and the grocery store’s front door.

And if anything, the fliers alert other people too in case someone found the dog and intends to keep it.

My PITA dog has made her way out a few times.
Once w/o her collar :frowning:
Some guy grabbed her and was driving around with her… She started freaking out when she saw us and he pulled over.

Other times, we have recieved a phone call as her name, number and address are on a tag.

Link to CL ad? What neighborhood?

Microchip! I’ve got both my dogs chipped.

Mine have taken off, but have always come back eventually… normally after an hour or so. Bastards.

Check the local Pounds, I know Cheektowaga has their own Dog Pound.

It’ll go to the SPCA and they’ll track you down via the rabies tag if nothing else.

We haven’t had ours chipped yet, my wife wants to wait until she’s under anesthesia since she can be a big baby.
I had the dog slip out the door once; luckily she stopped at the end of the driveway and looked back at me like “why are you still at the door?” It took her a second, but she came back. The other time she got away from me, she pulled out of her collar because of waves crashing on the beach, and freaking out. She ran about 10’ and froze.

Good luck finding yours.

my dogs have gotten out a few times as well but never go past the end of the driveway. however my bassett hound did fly out the door once and started attacking a poodle… thank god my dad was working on his truck at the end of the driveway and got the dog of the poodle before anything could happen

My sister works for a vet that takes in the dogs the Hamburg dog catcher gets before they end up at the SPCA. She said to call the one in your town, that’s about it besides the SPCA in terms of who handles lost dogs.
