Don't you hate it when this happens?

2 days, PB Blaster, BFH and a torch later, I’m still dealing with this.

The rotor is so rusted on, it cracked/split before coming off:

Anyhow, I swapped out the hub to get the car back on its wheels, but now I have an ABS Inop idiot light.

I’m hoping to get the original hub free of the rotor and swap back.

Any other ideas? Anyone have a hydraulic press?

Happens alot. Next time do not hit it with your purse. You wont have to wait 2 days.I had a customer brought me his jetta with his rotors like that. Said it started making noise yesterday.

That is why I make a point of removing the rotors every 10-15K miles.
It takes maybe 10 minutes a corner and it saves you tons of time in the future.

damn, don’t even know. Maybe some kind of hub puller tool or take it to a shop.

The rotor on my gto was super bad like that. Tried doing the brakes with a healing broken arm, took me like 4 days to get the rotor 1/2 way off and finally took it to Hybrid. If you use axel grease between the hub and rotor when you put the news ones on, I wonder if it would help prevent it seizing up like that

I always do this when i have the rotors off.

If I hit it with my purse, it’d have been done by now. I have a big purse.

So do I… but I just picked up the car, and it was like this.

Wow, that’s never happened to me, but that would suck. I always grease the back of the hub with never-seize, though.

Beat the piss out of it with a sledge whats the problem??

The ones on my Expedition only gave up after I cut a V into them and literally peeled them off the hub like an orange. I beat the living piss out of it before resorting to cutting.

I think there are pictures of the mess here somewhere.

To the “just hit it harder” crew, hope you like replacing ball joints, tie rods, and bearings. I was getting an inspection watching some 8$/hr tool monkey at a local chain swing a 3 foot handled sledge with pretty much everything he had trying to break some guys rotors free. I’m sure a week later when the guys bearing, ball joints or tie rods were shot no one made the connection.

And yes, I ended up replacing a tie rod, drivers side, about a month after doing the rotors on the Expedition. The passengers side was fine because on that side I went straight to the angle grinder.

EDIT:
Guess there were no pictures, but here’s the thread:

cut that bitch off

That’s my point, as the ABS sensor is IN the hub.

That being said, anyone ever fail inspection for an “ABS Inop” light?

ubengineering.

ABS is not part of the inspection.

You are fine with the ABS, what type of torch were you using? I have had some beyond stubborn rotors that came off pretty slow with a torch and PB, but they at least came off! I also taped gently with a small 1’ 3lb sledge, and had a nice long pry bar between the hub and the rotor.

Except for the torch, I used that (see bottom pic). Otherwise, all I had was a propane torch.

Yeah just heating it and hitting it works if it is minor, but on a bad rotor, usually the heat without any type of prying wont get you anywhere. I would check Carpart.com for a used factory hub.

air hammer has got every stuck drum and rotor for me.

dang f bodys!

Just a propane torch won’t cut it, doesn’t get hot enough.
