Finally started taking a look at the suspension on the 79 Camaro. Currently, it has a set of traction bars (not sure on brand), and my father said that the shocks are adjustable (firmness), but I’m not sure. He also mentioned that the front springs were not OEM, but again I’m not sure as he did most of the suspension work when I was last living in AZ.
Anyway, without spending a ton, what does this thing need to get some good 60’ times out of it? Current drag wheel/tires are 28" M/T Slicks w/skinnies up front. Converter is obviously not OEM, but we both forgot the specs on it (we did most of this work ~9 years ago or so).
Are the traction bars a garbage idea? Should anything be done with the leaf springs themselves? I admit that I know little to nothing on this subject (with this car anyway):banghead
The point of the traction bar was to eliminate spring wrap with the leafs. They will work and if it’s got a firm shock out back and a 90/10 up front you should get decent weight transfer.
Make sure the front has plenty of movement. Any sort of bind will not help in your efforts. Like said, 90/10 in front. 50/50 LR and a 10/90 RR. I may have it reversed % wise, but mine super lose up front, kinda neutral LR and stiff RR. I have coils also too, so might be a little different with the leafs.
sub frame connectors , caltrachs in the back, no front sway bar , adj shocks , tubular lower cntrl arms in the rear . sticky tires and let it eat , go thru spohn for your lower cntlr needs steve is great and excellant to deal with
