I guess I could share my new problem with the vette here to pick some heads.
PRP this past saturday, made 2 passes… first time I’ve been out when its been fairly collected on the track (tracking launching straight). So, since that was figured out, a new problem develops the faster it goes.
Out of the hole, it seems ok. 1-2 strong shift, still makes ok power. tward the end of 2nd, there is no breaking up yet power seems to have planed off a little. 3rd gear, problem is most evident. the car will nose over like its running out of fuel. its still smooth sounding, no missfiring… similar to if you were pedaling the car slowly off and on.
Checked everything out, holds fuel pressure fine, floats fine, no leaking anywhere… everything I could possibly think to go over seems ok.
Here’s my theory, let me know if this makes sense. There is no carb plate to seal the inlets to the hood/scoop. I once thought I remembered hearing that the air rushing under the car and into the engine bay can vortex or something and start pulling the fuel out of the carbs. Does this sound right? My nova has one and has never had a problem like this. Just looking for opinions and other ideas. I have very little info about this car and its setup and if it even ran on its current setup. So, i’ve been weeding through all the hard stuff for now.
at some point I may, but i care more about what happens on the track. if i get the no2 ready to spray, maybe i’ll strap it to the dyno to dial that in and see if its cleared up with no air rushing by it.
I thought I saw your car there. You drove right past us standing in front of Justin’s TT IROC.
Could it be a vapor lock issue? How’s your vent in your fuel cell? Are you losing any fuel pressure? I see you stated good fuel pressure, but is it falling off at all, or staying at a constant?
Most guys that I know who run those scoops seal the carbs to the hood so only fresh air is getting to the carbs. This would eliminate any possible ‘vortex’.
carb hats for transporting it. None of the no2 is working as of right now, so nothing should be getting sucked through or leaking past.
Hey, no kidding? I wanted to walk over to check it out, but never got the chance. The fuel pressure gauge is mounted on the intake, so i really dont know what its doing at the point of the problem. I should try and put a guage inside, maybe for next year I will do that. I didnt check the vent to make sure it was ok, i’ll check that too.
I think that carb plate is going to be manditory. I’d like to see if anyone has a similar setup that doesnt have any problems…
Is the pump feeding enough fuel? that could be a problem that is causing fuel pressure to back down. Most guys that max out single intank pumps in the fbody/lsx world in general are experiencing problems like that. Fuel pressure will drop and car will fall on its face. 2nd and 3rd gear must be putting a load on the motor making some good hp so your seeing the problem then…
Then again wouldnt all gears see similar problem and not get worse the higher in gear you go? Higher in gear means your moving faster so maybe its also related to speed and thus maybe the air vortex thing your talking about?
Is the fuel getting pushing back and not able to get sucked up by the pump? Not sure how your setup works.
Car looked bad ass when you drove by…I was looking at it and thought that car looked familar, then remembered it from here.
The setup is your standard sump, external pump setup with return. First thing will be to get that gauge in there and monitor it. I might see if OST can strap me down and make a couple pulls to see whats happening without air moving around it and also watching fuel pressure at the regulator. I think if the pump was going bad, it still would work ok under light load but then fall over under heavy load. hm. …thanks for the compliment man!
It may want a -10 feed, as carbs use less fuel pressure and thus need bigger lines. -8 is more of a high hp EFI line, -10 is average feed line for carb setups
