I need some help or suggestions as to whether I’ve chosen a good spot on my car to drill a hole in the firewall. I have a lot of experience with wiring audio/video in cars, but I’ve just never needed to drill a hole in the firewall, I’m usually able to find an existing grommet, and on top of that I have more than just one small 8 ga. wire to run this. I need to run some power cables, and alarm wires, as well as some wires for some switches, but I can’t seem to find any existing grommets to run all these wires through. I came to the conclusion that it would be easiest for me drill a new hole and put in a grommet. I’m driving a 92 S13, and it has ABS so that whole unit is in my way on the passengers side. I wanted to drill the hole slightly below the ABS on the passengers side, but if I was to put the hole their, I’m wondering if it might be a problem because its right in the wheel well of the car. I’m not worried that it will effect turning or anything, I’m just afraid that any wires I run there might get more damaged by weather (IE rain, rocks), and just anything that could hit them. Also this will be my first time installing an alarm, and if I’m correct most of if not all the wires will need to be on the drivers side of the car. So I’m not sure if this is either the best place to drill the hole, or even the ideal place for me to drill the hole. Any input will help.
put the small wires through with the hood latch cable and the larger amp power wires through the engine wiring harness, the gromet is hard to get to from inside but you can stab a coat hanger through from the engine bay. the engine wiring harness gromet is located behind the blower motor/A/C evaporator, or under the ABS stuff.
I think I’ve solved my problems. I found a grommet on the passengers side of the car and its used to run wires from in the car to the inside of the passengers door (IE power locks/windows) I managed to squeeze my wires through there, and zipped tied them with ones already running through the inside fender. All in all it’s worked out well. As for installing the alarm, which I don’t have yet I’ll be picking up this week. I think I’ll be able to run the wires through with the hood latch grommet, I guess I’ll have to wait to see how many wires actually need to be run from the engine bay into the car. Does anyone know? It will just be a basic alarm with keyless, I would assume its just a power feed, and what ever wires are attached to the sensor for when you car gets hit.
I’d use mil connectors, they have a range of heavy metal ones that mount into any surface to give you a fancy plug-in female, all the mil connectors are snap or spin lock so you won’t accidentally yank it out
