Dude, i totally have a 97 german import jetta...*rant*

QQQQQQQQQQ!

one can only assume it’s for the german import jetta…

Old rolled up newspaper > *

I’ll even stretch the paper tubes for that euro style.

nope. they all suck

You must not forget the blessed Pre-DSM and DSM owners…

I think DSM owners have it worse then VW owners IMHO…

Technically with a DSM a repair is a straight forward and almost constant process.

Verus VW where they just over-engineer everything around the broken parts to make it look fancy.

Also making them a shit ton more expensive to fix when compared to ohhhh say honda. And I know this.

lolz, the curse of the 97.Please tell me its not black, mine is black and I dont want to be mistaken for a turd.

O/T…when does the chain need to be done on a 97?

ehh, not really. in almost all dsm’s defense, a well maintained and taken car of dsm will be pretty reliable. an awd, turbo car, especially one that has been around since 1989, is really hard to NOT beat the piss out of.

now fbods, those just suck

ehhhhh, they dont every really need to be done in my opinion. my car was at 170k and i never changed them. yes, they were loud. if you have bad compression, or need to drop the tranny to do the clutch and your over 100k or so better check to see how the guides are holding up. change them if you want, the parts are relativly cheap but its a pain in the ass job.

just keep driving it

Please do not listen to him.

If you want to get a run down of vr6 maintenance, PM me and we can discuss.

Tsk,tsk JAM.

most say do them between 70 and 100K. how many miles is on your car? your average 97 should probably have them done by now IMO. while you are in there do the water pump too.

EDIT: should have read the whole thread. definitely talk to jaeger (VR6 genius)

pretty sure the water pump is run off the serp belt…

^Yeah but they’re known to fail.

i know, mine did, its a really straight foreward job, and dosent have to be done before the pump starts pissing. but thats just my opinion.

^Makes sense. You have to draw the line somewhere between preventative maintenance and if-it-ain’t-broke-don’t-fix-it. For someone with my time and ability, my chains are going to get awfully noisy before I worry about it. Plus I think they revised the guides sometime before my car was built so they last longer. I don’t know if my water pump is a likely failure, but again it’ll wait till it’s a problem.
