The officer sees a suspicious looking driver/passenger/car (read pos driven by a mexican looking guy), and signals to the dog to paw at it. The officer then says “The dog is pawing at your car, please exit the vehicle”.
All kidding aside the dogs do smell things that shouldn’t be. They could smell a person around the rear axle of a van and they are trained to sit or paw or bark etc… this would be a legit hit. Obviously they are trained to sniff out narcotics as well.
There are a lot of documented cases of dogs hitting only on officer command though. It helps to establish probable cause where it otherwise wouldn’t exist. It is an interesting loophole.
I find crossing the boarder fun, agents usually are pretty cool. Can’t bar me from re-entering the county as previously mentioned. A week of being detained would be very relaxing. I also have several bowel movements a day so I doubt it would take that long.
I’m not a k9 handler, but I’ve seen it first hand. Fucking magic, I think they smell fear.

This is the biggest myth ever, a k9 handler does not have a. Secret code for his dog to signal. The dog signals to a scent that is of hidden people, or narcotics. A k9 handler would never want a false hit because it jeopardizes the integrity of the k9.
Believe it or not, most law enforcement are not hoping they find illegal substances on someone, it’s a shit ton of paperwork and we don’t get paid any extra… But, if we do find something, it’s illegal for us to “let him/her slide”

In Canada here, it’s “considered an acceptable minor infringement on charter rights”, these RIDE programs. Although, I have personally experienced a couple ‘spontaneous ride checks’ aka abuse of power.
But for the most part, it’s simple if you don’t fail the attitude test, and unless your on your way back to work at the law office, best to just shut up, or risk any stupid infraction, “alter/modify license plate”

To be frank, I came to this thread to provide info, not to defend certain actions by both civilians and government actors. LZ decided he wanted to personally attack me for whatever reason. I’ll let him believe what he wants, I’m sure he’s much more intelligent that I when it comes to computer systems. I guess I just have a thing towards people who constantly bitch on the Internet, as they are able to hide behind their screen, yet IRL they do nothing to stand up for what they believe. That’s all.

Fucking this x100. I’m all for plate readers, LEO should be able to use them in the moment to locate stolen cars and/or to pull up owner records looking for ACTIVELY WANTED individuals. Using the readers to harvest & store data about the comings & goings of innocent/free citizens, that I cannot support.
I agree that in WNY we don’t seem to have an abundance of checkpoints. Maybe the cold/winter has something to do with having less random stop/check points. Their timing does usually seem proper to me (seasonal cars etc…).
