Anyone else ever try it? I found it pretty awkward at first, but I’ve been using it at home for 6 months now, and I am relatively proficient. I continue to use QWERTY at work, so I retain the skills that the masses use. I’m not faster on it by any means, but it was a neat learing experience.
I never even re-labeled the keys, I just put a printout of the DVORAK layout and kept it close.
I can actually switch from one to the other and back again, I often have my laptop running and do stuff on it while doing other crap on my personal desktop, takes a second or two, but after that it’s cake.
Certainly doesn’t give any real advantages at this point since you can change the setting in the OS, but it was fun anyway.
Back to my original question, anyone else ever try it?
It is good for the mind and body to learn something new from time to time. I don’t look at the keyboard anyway, so switching back to qwerty only takes a few seconds, but I really don’t want to go back.
Plus it’s hilarious to watch other people struggle to type, they have no idea what is going on.
I’m crying over here from laughing so hard. Gearhead’s response’s are hilarious.
and I have not used dvorak
edit: I have found the answer to dvorak… why would you want ot change the settings of a keyboard layout? Because it makes for a funny ass prank to do on someone else’s computer.
It is a fantastic prank idea, but the reason I really got into it, was because of the research that showed children who hadn’t typed before, learned dvorak in 1/4 the time they took to learn qwerty.
I can’t say I’m really any faster on it right now, but it would be pretty funny to put a co-worker’s keyboard in it…then I could type on it, and say…“no, it’s fine…see?” They might go nuts like Andy on The Office.
