Any available locally? My dad wants to redo our bathroom. While he knows the basics of home repair, I don’t really trust him fixing the plumbing, electrical, tiling…etc. He’s now retired to due health conditions and has some spare time on his hands. If there are any classes he or I could take that’d be good for the sake of the house
It’s DIY, not DYI. You definitely need some classes…
Please excuse my Russian accent.
home depot has a kids craft class every month
Other then that I don’t know of any but I would be down for some as well…looking forward to serious answers.
Read up on everything before you do it. Specific materials and how they work together, or don’t, stuff like that.
X…
i bet youtube plus some books would work great. he could read up on it then watch someone do it. but plumbing and electrical work aren’t usually diy’s sans changing a sink or switch plate.
In for info. Need to reno my bathroom and would like to learn something instead of dumping lute to a stranger.
the black and decker books are supposed to be a great resource http://amzn.to/fVb82s . Learning with electrical can be dangerous, both while you’re working, and for the hidden risks after the work is done (don’t want wiring short cuts burning down your house). Make sure he follows the relevant codes (there is a B&D book)
They do? I take the kids to the Lowes one.
If he’s board, tell him to get a book from the libarary and skim over the work required.
The work involved is not extemely difficult. It is just hard to do well.
Well he has no problem reading, he usually reads 3-4 books a week.
whatever you do dont cheap out and use crap materials. in my parents house my dad redid the bathroom 3 times in the last ~15-20 years and its still a piece of shit that constantly needs work and looks like crap because hes a cheap ass that doesnt understand what quality is and its long term benefits.
i suggest watching all the home tv shows for ideas?
it’s all pretty easy, only thing that may be difficult is assembling a faucet if it’s required. and as stated, dont buy cheap garbage shit.
what are you trying to do?
Everything LOL…new subfloor, tile, toilet, vanity, paint the walls, replace plumbing. I have a feeling there is a leak somewhere in the shower setup. It leaks into the basement when the shower/tub is used and the water pressure blows ass. So basically a new bathroom.
If you give up and want to hire someone, shoot me a PM.
all of it’s relatively easy, just need the right tools. are you going to be putting in a new shower base/tub, and then tiling over that instead of a whole fiberglass unit?
There is no class that can teach you in a few hours what takes most years to perfect. Experience and technique is 95% of the trades.
^ this
I can probably do some but I don’t want to even pretend I have the knowledge to do it all. I’ll ask him about it.
The shower/tub will most likely stay, they tub “insert” will need to come off and the drywall will need to be removed to fix the leak. Aside from that I’m not sure his plans.
Amen brother, somebody finally gets it.
We’re doing our bathroom soon if you want to stop by and pick up some tips… I’m an apprentice myself. So everything we do in our house is both up to code, and done correct.
edit: Chris works for Danforth and has everything checked over to make sure we’re not violating any codes. Plus his brother that lives downstairs is a lawyer.
