Where to learn how to paint cars

Thinking about painting my car myself this summer, i have a ton of rock chips that i just want to start from scratch with the paint. Do any of the schools around here offer one off classes on auto paint?

BOCES night classes

I went there 20 years ago with my dad. I believe they still do it.

Get a book…buy equipment…find junk hoods/fenders/doors and practice.

looking at their class catalog, it only has auto collison 1… which has some other stuff, but never really mentions painting, just prep

its really all in the prep work and the detail

yea, i know… my car is clean, only one small dent, just a bunch of little rock chips etc…

I hava a nice garage to paint in, and a good compressor… would only need to buy the gun… It would be a skill i wouldnt mind learning so i can experiment with differant colors on my car if i want…

ECC has some courses, I noticed when I used to go their a bunch of students had there cars painted by the end of the semester. Wouldnt hurt to stop by a few restoration shops and ask if they are willing to take you under there wing.

:word:

my dad helped me too, but he learned by using that method. DIY and having it come out better than a factory paint job is awesome.

the key to a quality paint job is ALL in the prep work, patience is key…

If you do BOCES at Potter Rd, the description for auto body 1 is really dependent on how much the teacher likes you. I took that, restored a car through the year, and painted it 2 weeks after classes ended. If Mr. Rebmann(sp?) still teaches it, he’s cool as fuck.

anybody have some books they recommend? amazon was really all over the map on their reviews

i also want to learn this…nothing i would want to do as a career but i want to be able to work on my own cars as well as some friends… let me know what you find… night classes are all i could do

a good compressor is half the battle, you need lots of air capacity, ie more or bigger tanks for continuous feed.

OMG Mr. Rebmann and Mr. Mroz were my favorite teachers I EVER had.

I recc you not spend the money for classes, equip, time, lack of facility and fustration in learning just to paint your own car. It just does not seem worth it. I took the course at ECC and painted cars for a while. It will cost you more than 3-fold what it would cost to just have someone do it for you. just my .02

Good point. Those classes aren’t cheap.

Might as well just recruit a friend who knows their way around a paint gun to help you practice on some spare parts.

my friends go there and they told me some crazy shit that happens and how he is a good teacher lol

A book will only go so far.

HVLP, Garage, and scrap body panels will teach you the most.

your neighbors are going to hate you, ask me how I know LOL

HaHa the smell is pretty damn strong

Pay someone that will let you be involved in the process. You can help/learn at the same time and assure a quality job is being done.
