would it be easier/cheiper to go to autozone or somewhere buy the paint and rent a spray gun and just do what u learned from tutors to paint my car or have someone do it for me? let me know and tell me what u did?
are we talking color change, or what? it would be cheaper but the headache will last months. carquest in blasedell sells good paint, base coat, clear coat. after doing a few color changes already, unless you are in love with the bodystyle, and dont plan on ever selling the car, DONT BOTHER. a color change is waay waaay to much work for something that you feel “meh” about
NAPA for paint, and only try it yourself if you are confident you can do it, and don’t care a whole lot on how it is gonna come out. Other wise get someone on here to paint it for you.
ok pm me who ever paints cars with qoutes i just want basic red theres alittle scratch i could fix myself and i will do the primer cause thats easy. i just want basic red witha clear coat
Prep is realllllly imported so when you say you can primer… then you can paint… Where ever you paint and ask questions of the people you by paint from. (I get mine at Urban Paint or somthing here in NT) vary knowlegable. and do it on a warm day if you dont have heated garage/paint booth. the only way to learn is do it. so mabye find a buddy’s winter beater and try changing the color on that first.
im not paint expert, but from what i understand, wetting the floor is a horrible idea.
the moisture will soak into the paint and it will not atomize correctly
(feel free to flame if im wrong)
edit: check this out: http://www.neilslade.com/Papers/Painting.html
that link breaks everything down, i think it can give anyone the confidence to DIY
that vw looks like shit. and wetting the floor is not good when it evaporates into the air. Water/paint mixture is not good
well not all of use have a paint booth… and if your floor is dusty crappy like mine you will get imperfections in the paint… my best resolt came from wetting the floor. and that is FAR from my best resolt as that is single stage.
edit if you look at first pic you will see the dust from sanding on the floor. wetting keeps that from blowing around.
But feel free to flam on my work, wheres yours?
result
urban paint is great…the guys there are very knowledgable and helpful

All done in a big garage, no booth,
Before:
After
SO CLEAR;
and all this done before wetsanding/buffing
what did u use a gun or the spray paint cans?
Well I only use spray guns now. After how easy they are to use. But i still spray can with primer on small spots, but spray gun primer when needed
ok im pretty sure im ready now. just dont be an ass with this paint ha… what im sure im goin to do is sand… fix all problems… use primer from the spray paint cans. rent or buy a gun and base coat alot cause i want deep red… then clear coat and buff alot. tell me if im stupid and shouldnt do this ha
do it an learn from your mistakes. and when you say base coat alot dont make sense. just use the right number of coats and then clear. the number of coats dont make it deeper just get a different color
Find your exact color you want, go to paint store. Urban paint, Napa on Wherlie… and have them match it. I know urban if you find a car color just go in tell them year make modal and paint name or paint code and they can do an exact match. when you get ready to paint PM me I might even let you borrow my gun as long as you CLEAN it good when your done. Im sure other people will stop bye…
but when you get the paint tell them your a noob thell set you up with the right stuff. also make sure you get 2 stage and clear. the jetta was pianted with single stage… never comes out as nice as 2 stage.
I’ve never personally painted a car, but I’ve helped; I leave the actual spraying to my brother who’s does it for a living.
As for painting cars at home without a booth and whatnot, honestly, the best results will be gotten if you basically make your own booth; it can be done for about $50 in materials and about a day of work. It only takes a box fan, a few 2x2s/2x4s and a couple rolls of hi-mil vapor barrier plastic. Basically build the box around the car using the 2x2/2x4s to frame the plastic to the cieling of the shop and hold the plastic to the floor, put the fan at one end, and cut a small slit at the other end to allow air in, basically making a horizontal flow booth.
As for the water idea… not good.
It is ALL in the prep work, sanding, priming, sanding, and sanding some more. Then properly mix the paint with reducer/hardener and take your time spraying properly. If you do this you will have a good paintjob with little to no contamination (due to the redneck booth) and not a lot of post-paint sand/buff.
As for wanting a “deep” red, that’s in the layerin of the paint with pearls and metallics. Talk with the place you buy the paint at about layering; it might not just be a base/clear to get the effect you are looking for. Most likely it’ll be a couple coats of base (typically 3 coats), another 3 or so coats of of a clear with pearl, then 3-5 coats of clear.
got any final product pics of the jetta?
Edit: just started to do some additional reading.
FYI- I’ve always mopped before I painted, figured it’ll keep dust down, but seeing it’s not reccomended to have ANY source of water vapor in the room during painting
