Edumacate me on a 370z

I’m looking to learn a little about the Nissan 370z. Pros, Cons. Please don’t just tell me (Its shit, sweet car, Etc) I’m looking possibly for my father as a next car. He has the Miata now and I believe wants something a little bigger in size and power. I know he’s looking around the $25k-$28k range. I believe he would prefer a convertible as well due to the Miata.

What differences in the handling, would you have with the vert to the hardtop? How reliable are these cars? What down falls are there with these cars?

Anything to help would be good.

If you can toss me another comparable car in that price range with about 30k miles or less… please do.

FYI - Base model convertibles w/ ~20k miles on them are going for more than $28k at the auction. You’re going to be over $30,000 for a nice three year old version.

Other than that, it’s a much nicer version of a 350Z. Skurge’s cousin just picked up a 2012 Coupe. Seems decent.

Alan? I know he got in the accident with the BRZ and didn’t know what he was going to do with it.

Found 2 already under $28k in a vert. Got to take a drive to get them, but hey… you make a trip out of it.

I drove a couple on a road course. They are fun and handle well. But im not sure if the ones i drove had an open rear or just a very lazy LSD. either way that was really my only complaint

They’re powerful and great street cars if he’s just going to putz around in it, maybe go to 8/10ths of the limit.

Completely uncompetitive autocross cars which basically tells you all you need to know about their at-the-limit handling.

The first comment would be correct. Hes mid 50s and is not looking to autocross or race it on a track. Just wants something with more power than the Miata and more room seeing as he looks like a gorilla in the Miata. lol

Check their history. Just be sure. Either that or they are bad colors.

Right, possible collision or Warranty fix the owner just wanted out of. Red and gray are the 2.

He can have my 300 for $ 30K.

He actually owned some sweet cars back in his day. First car was a Old Monte Carlo with Swivel bucket seats. He owned a Datsun 260 and 280, a late 80s 300zx twin turbo T top. had 2 different corvettes (late 80s c4 I believe it is) and I think a stingray with a 454. After all those, he hasn’t really had anything worth the joy besides a Miata which he gets on a little. Just would like to see him have something fun again and something more roomy for him and my mother. +safer.

Surprised you didn’t tell him to get an s2000 wtf ! Low mileage ap2 or CR

Believe me, its already been commented to him about getting one. But I still think this would be more for him over the s2k.

to me they are just meh, especially for the price tage that they fetch but to each his own good luck with your search

Yeah, it’s probably a bit much for him unless he wants to pull 2g’s on corners or travel back in time.

Roadsters are the red-headed stepchild of the Z lineup. Always have been. They are heavier and looser than their coupe equivalents, historically.

I do think your father will enjoy the low-end power of the V6, as a stock, spirited-driving, street car.

If I was going for a vert/roadster this wouldn’t be high on the list…

They look fugly and I really like hard top Zs

Why not a Z4? I thought used they would be in a similar price range.

Agreed, I like the hard top Zs as well. I see the Z4’s but never really looked much into them anymore. I thought I heard that they’ve gotten a little better since they came out with them. I just figured if you go with the z4, you might as well do that S2000.

In my opinion, it is NOT a no-brainer decision to go with an s2000 over a Z4. I think they are comparable, but I would imagine that the I-6 motor in the Z4 would lend itself better to spirited street driving over the high-revving I-4 in the s2000. There is also the obvious build/interior/bells and whistles of the BMW.

I purchased a 2006 Z4 over a 2006 S2000

more low end torque for around town, bigger trunk, more relaxed highway cruising, better ride, better MPG (32+ @ 80 mph on the highway with the top down).

That said the S2000 is by far the superior sports car. The Z4 is more a lifestyle car - I got mine to reward me for graduating law school - your dad would probably love it.

My wife and I used it to travel all the time - enough room for 5+ days for a couple and just plain fun. Sporty enough to entertain but soft enough for touring duty. She even liked driving it.

Problem I heard with the z4 was the suspension being very rough.

Thank you.

Have you driven the 370 at all?
