Emissions Testing Question

I recently put a CAI in my car and to make everything work properly, I had to put a breather filter on the crankcase breather valve. My question is, will I fail the county emission tests with it set up like this?

nope, not unless you have a check engine light. i never heard of an intake causing one.

No lights. Some intakes can cause them if you’re driving in the rain.

it would fail visual if your are in a non I/M county. crankcase gases are easily the most harmful to the environment.

why would a cold air intake delete your pcv? that’s the stupidest thing I’ve ever heard, no working pcv typically causes your engine oil to sludge faster

I/M??

The breather valve/PCV is 7/16", the inlet on the intake is 1/2" and the hose provided is 5/8". The way it came was the hose connects into the stock breather hose, but it wasn’t releasing the pressure because that stock hose needs the same breather valve off the old airbox, but you can’t get it out without tearing the rubber around it. I don’t want to tear it as I will want to put it back to stock when I go to sell it.

If I wanted to do it legally, I’d either have to splice together two hoses to a connector and I have yet to find a connector that matches the sizes I need or buy another valve separately (which apparently you can’t do, but I’m looking into it). It’s just very complicated and this set up with the small filter (done by other 3 owners) works to release that pressure the easiest way.

I/M is allegheny, washington, beaver and westmoreland. only required to do fuel cap and OBD II on 96+. no visual part of state or emissions

So them I’m good?

no codes = good

What brand of intake did you get? I was thinking of getting a SRI intake for my 3 in the spring when I buy an exhaust, but I don’t want to have to deal with this stuff. I just want something that I can throw and and go w/ no modifications to the parts.

Excellent. Thanks for the help.

It’s the Simota Twin Charger. They also make the Carbon Fiber intake, but it’s the same price as AEM, Fujita, etc. For that price, you get more performance from a CAI. The Twin Charger was $100 from a distributor in Monroeville.

Wasn’t much to do to modify it. Take off the original hose, put the filter on the breather valve and cap the elbow on the intake. Cost was $13.
