I was wondering what the rules were regarding state inspection for exhaust? i have an 87 suburban with a full exhaust to the muffler, then just turndowns. I thought I heard that it had to go out and clear the body, so could I just turn the turndowns sideways, add on some pipe, and have it clear out right in front of the driver side rear wheel?
What is considered the “passenger compartment”? The end of the rear doors? And also, what are you talking about would work, the setup I have now with turndowns or the setup I’m thinking abotu going to with it exiting out the side?
that’s touchy…the book says it needs to exit in a way that prevents gases from penetrating and collecting in any part of the vehicle occupied by the driver or passenger. It also says the system shall extend to the outside edge of the vehicle body. Side exit is okay

my stock camaro exhaust didnt exit beyond the back bumper and it was legal.
my exhaust now tho kinda worries me, as it dumps over the rear axle and not beyond the last part of the body. hopefuly it passes, but i’m redoin the last half anyway
Must exit the car, so a truck even if the exhaust goes past the cab will not pass with dumps… just read it a few weeks ago at the garage in the inspection book.
