Fall Fishing

I was there today. Water is high and stained, but more importantly, FULL of leaves. Was very frustrating. I’m not going back for another week. Every cast you’d reel in clumps of leaves.

What road does your friend line on?

N Creek

Went out for a few hours this weekend and got nothing. How did everyone else do?

I stayed in. Had lots of errands to do. I wanted to let the leaves get a chance to flush out anyways. There should be a TON of fish in the tribs now. There were quite a bit over the week when I was in 18-mile creek. In some of the deeper slower sections you’d see groups of 20-30 nice sized fish. I also saw a few Coho salmon. Here’s a little pic I snapped of a group of fish. The darker one at the back is probably 30" and 10lbs. It’s hard to see all of them, but there’s easily 30 in there.

I went out Saturday morning, from 6:15- 8:30, no luck. Might try drifting some sacks tomorrow morning.

After seeing this pic, looks like i am gonna try 18 mile. I was thinking of trying " map 1" and parking at the “P” ( referring to post #5 ). Any experience there?

That’s the area called Hobuck Flat’s. The creek is wider there in most of the spots. It requires far less walking to get to the fish. I’ve fished there once but didn’t get anything. It was in the spring though.

Figured I’d give this a bump! Has anyone else been out lately? Me and my girl did very well last week in the extremely low water conditions. Not very many fish in the tribs but that also means hardly anyone fishing. We landed about 15-20 fish total. A few nice steelhead near the 10lb mark.

A few weeks ago I went to a local outdoor show and entered a raffle that had a lot of prizes. I got a call the next day saying that I won a rod/reel combo. It is a 5’ Ultralight made of carbon fiber with a wavecast spinning reel. The reel is meh, but the rod is insanely good. Very strong! I told the owner of the company that I was going to take it out steelhead fishing and he advised me not to. It’s not built for big fish but I felt it had the power to handle them. I ended up hooking a REAL BIG fish that we got on film. It ended up bending the treble hook right out of its mouth:

Later after lunch we went back to a honey hole and I ended up landing a nice 9lber:

Have done some pond fishing with my son but just 2-3lb bass. Where abouts were you fishing, looks like a good time.

3lb bass is a big pond bass! Probably 20"

We were at Walnut Creek, Silver Creek, Chatauqua Creek, and Canadaway Creek. We saw the most fish at Walnut Creek, but most of them were skittish.

Nice update, this is going to pump me up to do some fishing this year

This is going to be the weirdest year. The lakes have stayed super warm much longer than normal. Most tribs are just starting to see the salmon coming into them. Typically around Labor day you can find salmon in the streams.

I took Dakota (Choda’s brother) out last week for some steelhead. He managed to land his first ever! It wasn’t big, around 18" and maybe 2lbs? But the way he caught it was awesome. We spotted a nice channel in the creek, and we maneuvered downstream so we could cast above the fish. I told him there would probably be some fish tucked into the sides just out of the current. He landed a nice cast way up above the fish and burned the spinner right down the middle of the channel. Within a second 2 small steelhead burst out and were chasing it. Even though it was a smaller fish, the adrenaline rush is still high when you do everything right, and the plan works to perfection. Plus later on we did see some big fish that came out and gave a little chase to what we were throwing.

@no_frnds

Hows fishing at canal side?

He takes the little one cause I smoke his ass every cast =]

Joel host a fishing derby for us!

I tried the Catt 2 weeks ago, and it was slow. Went up to Burt last week and it was really slow. Going to try the NYPA platform after work today and 18 mile-erie tomorrow.

Where would we go? Hard to do in a stream or a creek when the big fish are in. Too many other guys mixed in plus groups of out of state guys.

Did pretty good today! Me and my girl landed 7 and lost 7. Saw 2 other guys fishing, that’s it. Basically had every sweet pool to ourselves. The biggest that we landed was a 9lber my girl got. The water is warm enough that the fish will still take lures aggressively. That’s the kind of fishing I like. When the temp drops and their metabolism slows, they will only eat small eggs and jigs placed right on their nose. I don’t like to float fish even though it is productive. I think the adrenaline rush of the initial strike is half of the fun. You simply don’t get that feeling when float fishing. Your float goes down and you rear back with a 12’ rod. The hit just isn’t there.

Anyways here’s a few pics from today:

What creek is that ?

I can’t give away all of my secrets! This spot is a hidden gem, and I’d rather not say. We haven’t seen any real pressure in this stream and I’d like to keep it that way. 4 or 5 guys that keep a limit over a few days can easily decimate an area. Then they tell a few guys, and before you know it, it looks like Burt Dam.

I can tell you some great areas though that don’t get pressure and are 100% catch and release so there won’t ever be pressure. 18-mile out of Erie is a great spot. Park at the dead-end on South Creek Road and walk down, then head upstream. Most anglers avoid catch and release sections for some reason even if they practice catch and release. I’m not sure why. I always find that the areas with less pressure hold less fish, but the fish are much more eager to take a lure, and haven’t seen people in a while so they aren’t skittish.
