Fbod guys - need some help

Maybe someone here can shed some insight…

I have a 99 Camaro z28 that I just picked up last week actually…All was well until the last few days when I began having trouble with the temperature gauge (stock).

Basically, the gauge would randomly cut out (return to off position) and the car would begin to rev up. I could tell that it was revving because I pushed in the clutch and the RPMs shot up to like 2500 (no I was not touching the gas pedal). Seconds later, the temp. gauge would return to normal and the the RPMs would go back to normal as well.

Well, fast forward 3 days and now things have gotten worse. It went from happening one time the first day to many times the second/third day and now the gauge is completely dead. It will come on when I first turn the car on but once all the lights turn off (everything that lights up when you first turn the key), the temp gauge falls back to the off position.

So far I have just replaced the coolant temperature sensor near cylinder 1. Unfortunately, that did not seem to fix the issue and temp. gauge is still dead.

The car runs better now that the gauge is not working at all, however, it feels like it may be running rich (and caused the check engine light to come on).

Any ideas?

Check for a loose wire on that sensor, or a broken wire; I mean DIG into the harness between the sensor and ECM. My firebird did that; kinda; and the prior owner had spliced that wire; and over the years it had corroded and caused an almost identical issue.

First, get an OBD2 reader and see if there’s any temp reading. If it’s reading a constant -40 or whatever, your wiring is messed up somewhere, probably corrosion related… get a service manual if you don’t have one.

On aside note 98s are the only year the temp gauge is the dash is accurate…

Def check the wiring that plugs into the sensor though

Thanks guys, I’ll check the wiring out and see if I can find an issue.

That’s what I was going to say.
