:lol. Yeah, I know. I’m trying to get as much neutral colored stuff as possible. And definitely no bike manufacturer products. I will be buying the first three within the next couple of weeks for my BRC/MSF class on 8/1 and 8/2. Don’t want to use their gear, especially their helmet. I believe Phibbs carries all of these, so I will probably get it locally as opposed to online from RevZilla.
So far, I have slated for purchase the following based on reviews and videos from RevZilla, Motorcycle-Superstore, etc.:
Helmet - GMax GM68 MAX Helmet - Link
Jacket - Teknic Supervent Mesh Jacket - Link
Gloves - Icon Pursuit Perforated Touch Screen Gloves - Link
Eventually:
Shoes - Alpinestars Fastlane Shoes - Link
Pants - Speed and Strength Rage with the Machine Jeans - Link
Yeah both of those are Snell 2010 and DOT certified. I guess the reason why I liked the GMax was because of the little LED thing on the back. I feel like a new rider, I can never have enough things to make me seen by other drivers around me. :dunno
I will probably go with the Bell. Doesn’t look like Phibbs has either of these in their inventory.
Don’t go for the gimmicks, such as an LED thing. If you want to be seen by others get jackets that have reflective striping or bright colors. If you really and truly want to be seen by others and going to extremes of LED’s in helmet you shouldn’t be buying a black jacket. My $.02
Keep in mind there are “ricers” in motorcycle world as well, they are called squids…
In my experience white motorcycle gear gets dirty and stays dirty. I’ve had gloves that had white lining and through the ownership the lining was never white after the first week :lol
I was riding a black BMW S1000RR wearing a blue and white alpine suit at the time, no fucks were given that day.:lol
Helmet I’d suggest a HJC RSPA 10 nothing else from them.
Bell Star’s are on sell every now and then GenPat has one.
Shoei RF-1100 solid colors are cheap now.
Jacket Only go leather
Gloves: Your hands are the first thing you stick out in a crash to catch yourself in a fall buy good leather gloves with palm sliders.
Scorpion makes a great helmet… Specially for the price tag. I believe mine is the EXO 700 or something like that and I love it. It’s comfy and a lot quieter than my hjc was.
Did you mean an RSP or RHPA 10? I can’t seem to find the RSPA 10. You don’t think the Scorpion or Bell I listed are any good? The one below is obviously a lot more…
Bell Star is definitely a sexy looking helmet but damn that’s a lot of cash lol. Perhaps I’ll be better served getting something nice though, as it’s going to protect the most important part of me…
I was originally going to go leather, but after reading about them versus the technology in new textile jackets…I switched my ‘shopping cart’. Read that technology has come a long way and for the protection versus maintenance cost, etc. textile was often a better option. You don’t agree?
I personally wouldn’t touch mesh and would never have it my gear. But that’s just a quasi, non scientific biased opinion. I don’t trust it. After seeing pictures of what happens when you wear “old mesh” and after dealing with my fair share of road rash… if I’m wearing gear and spending money on it, it might as well protect me best it can.
Hightop shoe seems gimmicky to me as well, it’s always been steel toe boots at first and my Sidi boots as of the last few years. Once again “non scientific” bias, for all I know they protect just as well, but it’s not a risk I’m willing to take. Limping around for a week after a crash or an accident isn’t fun, I don’t want to do that for the rest of my life.
Also worth looking into back protectors as well, FYI
I trust your guys’ opinion so I’ll look into leather and boots.
For the boots, the BRC site says no tall heels. Is this considered a tall heel? I originally was going to get these but it seemed like maybe they were talking about this type of heel?
Just wear workboots. You don’t need to dress up like the stig because somebody on the Internet told you that you’ll be looked down upon if you don’t wear all of this goofy gear.
Majority of workboots have shit ventilation when it comes to having your feet next to (I’m assuming) a hot ass engine on a hot summer day. My dad is a mason and has had many a different pair over the years and they look like the least comfortable shoes ever.
I want something comfortable. Most comfortable work boots are probably $60-70 (or more) anyways. Might as well get a much better looking boot which was DESIGNED for riding a motorcycle. Not to mention, spend money once instead of buying a simple boot for just the class for say $40-60 and then buying something nicer down the road.
Relax. It’s not you buying the gear. I’d rather spend a little more and be well ventilated, and most likely better protected than not.
