LOLZ…I can confirm this works.

LOL… I am going to try this tonight. My neighbor has FIOS and I’m pretty sure he’s the kind of user who just keeps using the default config. Glad I’m running WPA2.

 awesome

It’s pretty awesome that someone thought this was a good idea.

I gotta change mine…I never bothered too…and when I did my brother reset the router and it defaults back to the original WEP key

This also works against ActionTec DSL routers and a bunch of other cheap ActionTec crap.

Most of the FiOS routers are Actiontec. The web interface to them is pretty nice.

if this works im canceling my internet sevice haha

HAHAHAHHA NO SHIT!!! IT WORKS!

Doesn’t work on the three different fios routers I tried in my neighborhood.

The WEP key given doesn’t even come CLOSE to what my out of the box WEP key is.

It worked for me when I tried earlier

Personally, I think it’s ridiculous that these things come with ANY default. It shouldn’t even allow you to connect to the internet without running the user through a wizard to configure an SSID and WEP Key.

The first thing anyone should do is always change this stuff, but most people don’t know or care to know what the consequences can be or why they should.

Design a wizard
sell to router manufactures
profit

I think Linksys might have some sort of wizard I don’t know though. Most people have a hard enough time hooking the thing up let alone configuring a WEP and SSID for it.

It’s 2010 you shouldn’t even be using WEP anymore…

well, whatever form of wireless encryption is recommended at the time. That’s the point though, I am an IT guy and a lot of times I don’t even know what the latest and greatest is for that kind of stuff. So how can the average user know?

most DO have a wizard, but they don’t force you to run through it. This is especially true with ISP built-in routers. Usually the tech comes out and sets it up, and he just leaves the default crap there.

It’s pretty common knowledge not to use WEP anymore

for some people…

WEP is better than nothing, and without a standard WEP key installed, that’s probably what most people would have…nothing. I think it might have something to do with copyright infringement. Someone gets an unprotected router, claims a neighbor was downloading all those new movies that are still in theaters. I think 98% of WEP/WPA is to prevent moochers rather than hackers.

Actually having open wireless is probably a better defense if you’re doing something illegal…

You can crack a WEP key in 10min or less…If your going through the work to enable WEP you its not anymore work to enable WPA2 and its probably because you can use a pass phrase instead of trying to remember a random string since you have fixed lengths with WEP.

Seriously, what can’t be compromised these days? If someone wants something and knows how get, they will get it.
