Read the few threads that have popped up, not sure if they’re up to date.
Thinking about picking up an S14/13 stateside.
-Paperwork
-How’d you plate/insure it to drive back, if you drove it back?
-anything else related.
-carproof down there?
-anything I should look out for to make sure I don’t get screwed like buying a stolen car or something lol
-what if it comes with swap?
Thanks.
And please don’t post riv’s website. I got that link already.
From what ive been told is you need to give border 3 days notice with bill of sale, pay taxes at the border and get the car inspected at a canadian tire. not sure if this parts true but been told if the car was domestic taxes are much much less so like chevy, ford, dodge etc.
confused. It says I can’t bring back any car older than 1997 ? But I’ve heard of people bringing back CRX’s and my 1996 S14 was imported a long time ago ? =\
We dont live in Nunavut, theres plenty good, excellent and TERRIBLE cars for sale. Just have to spend money when justified, or deal with a shitheap and resist buying on impulse or “THERES NOTHING I WANT FOR SALE THIS WEEK, IM BUYING THIS POS ANYWAY I WANT IT NOW” syndrome. I think we all have made s-chassis purchases like that.
Without dealer plates, driving it back is sketchy. I traded with a guy in the states and we met at the border. Swapped plates for our respective drives home. Not exactly legal.
The border was totally fine. I didn’t even give them advanced notice. Filled out the paperwork at the border, dude quickly verified the sticker in the door jam, paid the taxes and off I went. Quick, cheap inspection at Canadian Tire and you’re good to get new papers from the MTO. There will be hassle if the car needs anything to meet our “standards”. Plus the taxes and fees aren’t exactly cheap. Unless you’re getting a steal of a deal, its not really worth the hassle and money (IMO).
If you can only afford cars in the states that you like, exactly like Dylan said, imagine adding at least 2gs on top. So would 2gs on your budget locally find you something you like? If so…avoid the hassle.
Its almost not worth the hassle to bring cars home from BC when I come back to ontario. I would only do it if, I sold a car there, had a reason to go etc. Just fuel alone is 600+ 3 months insurance (approx 350) and plates etc +oop inspection for ontario + a week of time off + risk of breakdown +risk of death from crazy animals, fucked up weather etc. Some of my facebook friends saw what I went through bringing my 180 from out west in mid april. Not exactly a “walk in the park” haha.
car proof on a 240 lol
wow that must b the funniest shit i ve ever read on son lol
as for driving it back… ill say you just ask someone who drives a flatbed cross the border. what if you get 2 flat tire on the road… then your fucccccckkked. (thinking your 240 that you just bot is in mint running condition under lets say maybe 5~6 hours of driving… in 28+'c weather. lol lol lol

ps: you guys saw that 95 240 on ebay? lol sick ride starting at 4500 eh?
what about if i just want to drive the car temporarily in canada lets say for 3 to 4 years im staying there. the car is registered under my name in california.
go on the government. the registar of imported vehicles.
FOLLOW EXACT DIRECTIONS.
its very easy. already imported cars from the states before.
get insurance like u would buying any car. plate the car in the state u buy it. (as a Temp drive through permit) drive it to the border with 3days notice. export the car from the states side. import forms and ish. pay ur tax + duty on canadian side.
and the rest is delt in ontario.

@ funes… u can’t do that. lol ud have to drive it back to the states every once in a while, plus your cali plates will expire… and its emissions…
RIV exemptions
Vehicles are exempt from the Registrar of Imported Vehicles (RIV) registration if they are imported under one of the following conditions:
Vehicles older than 15 years
The vehicles (excluding buses) are 15 years old or more based on the date of manufacture, or are buses (including school buses) manufactured before January 1, 1971. The importer must be able to prove the age of the vehicle.
What does this mean a 15+ year old vehicle is exactly exempt from?
The $200 RIV fee, paperwork and notice?
Also any vehicle made in North America is exempt from paying duty(6.1%)
