I’m looking for some insight on where I should go with this asphalt driveway. It was neglected for a while before I bought the house despite being the old man’s pride and joy at some point, and has a lot of cracking, scarring, and assorted wear. But it’s not sunken in anywhere and it’s still level enough. Can this be repaired/resurfaced? I’ve got a few names to call, but I’d like to know what to expect before I start calling around. I’ve seen some vids where they repair really bad areas and then coat the whole thing to look uniform. Ideas?
Ideally, I’d like to eventually extend the whole thing over on the right so I can park 2 cars wide. Right now I’m driving in the dirt a bit to park 2 right up by the garage. Here’s a few pics- it’s still wet in spots so the cracks are more pronounced.
That’s pretty much what mine looks like and I was told it would be best to rip it out and start fresh. I’m interested to see what you do with it though.
Thanks. I was hoping that wasn’t the case, but it is what it is. I’d be weary about concrete because I have/work on older cars in the driveway, one of them being an air-cooled Beetle that leaves a drip or two everywhere. Even if it cleans up, better that I don’t even notice it in the first place. That looks great though, and appears to be a similar-sized driveway to mine based on the pic.
Driveway is shot. When it’s breaking up like that it is most likely the subbase is failing. If you top over that the cracks will look the same and reflect through the surface after a year or 2. Sealing, or topping is throwing your money away. If anyone quotes you resurfacing that walk away…
Only thing to do is dig it out, place fabric, stone, and new asphalt. I would recommend a type 3TS binder if you would rather do one lift and save some money vs a lift of binder and top.
Hope to have him do my buddy’s driveway this summer. Can you recommend anyone in the South towns area who would be interested in the tearout portion? I don’t think I have it in me anymore.
I am thinking concrete will be twice the money. Put concrete near the house (where you park) so you are not dragging asphalt in to your house. (Unless you always take your shoes off.)
It may sound weird but over time your floors will show it.
Thanks for the advice. I’ve never had an issue with dragging anything in, but maybe because it hasn’t been coated in years? I do take my shoes off though. I have had issues with jack stands sinking in and the dumpster I rented left big indents. I never cared, but I will with a new driveway. What’s the best way to deal with that- put them on something big and flat?
I always used square pieces of 3/4" plywood under my jacks/jackstands back when I lived at home and we had an asphalt driveway. Even a piece just big enough to cover the footprint of the stand was enough to prevent indents.
Better to ask for forgiveness than permission. No matter what I’m going 2 cars wide. Hopefully I won’t have issues with tree roots in the future by taking it a few feet closer to the woods. The big ones are further over. The whole side yard is just weeds and big roots and needs to be redone.
