So now that my fan blades have torn itself off its assembly and punctured my rad, I’m looking to getting replacement blades but I’m not sure which ones I should buy cause flex-a-lite’s online parts catalogue don’t have any pictures. Could anyone who has these electric fans tell me which blade I should be looking at? There’s the normal version and then there’s the “S” blade version and without pictures I’m not sure if the description does any justice.
Also, are the fans application specific?
they are all garbage
go to the junk yard and look for a 91 ford taurus/mercury sable with a 3.8l V6 and take the fan off that. It is a 2 speed fan, low speed pushes about 2200CFM and high speed is about 3800-4000CFM.
I picked up mine from a junk yard for $30, all i had to do was pull it out myself.
I put mine in when i did the SR swap using my KA24DE A/C. I have mine set up with a flexa-lite adjustable switch which turns on the fan when the temp reaches about 195F, it is on for about 15-20 secs then turns off again untill the temp rises back up. I have mine set up with a manual override that turns it on as soon at the A/C turns on. So far it works flawlessly when idling and reving, I don’t have a catback on the car yet so I haven’t tested it on the street but everyone who has one swears by it. I have no reason to doubt it yet.
If you get one, it has to be form a 3.8L V6 not the 3.0L V6 models… it will say on the vavle cover.
theres another post on fans in general even a post on fan/rad/panels for best results lol… just upgrade ur fan… take it out and put in the taurus fan or altima fan… both works just as good… not worth buying flexilite 200$ fan when u can get same results… other then baller status and bling factors lol
hi, can you give me more info about the temp. switch that u got? where did you get it, how did u install it? thanks
You can buy the temp switch at Performance improvements for 50 bucks. Its a simple device, you stuff it into your upper rad hose and when the temp reaches your set point it triggers a switch that turns your fans on.
Before someone else jumps on you… please introduce yourself in the Intro thread linked here: http://www.son240sx.ca/forum/viewtopic.php?t=1367&start=1260
Now… the temp switch is a Flex-A-Lite, part number 31147
I picked it up at Performance Improvements, expensive , but worth it.
The switch comes with simple instructions. Really easy to install, only gets complicated if you have A/C (which I do on the SR) and want to have your fan turn on and stay on while the A/C is on.
The switch has 1 adjustible knob that turns 180degrees. It goes from 160F-240F. It also has 3 connectors one labeled “C”, “2”, and “1”.
The fan has 2 connectors one positive and one ground
The install goes:
- insert temp switch probe though the rad fins by the inlet (where teh coolant enters the rad)
- Fan negative gets grounded to chassis
- Fan positive gets connected to “C” on temp switch
- “2” on temp switch connects to a fused power source (I ran a 14 guage power with an inline 30amp fuse form the battery positive to the “2”)
That’s it. The “1” connector on the switch is not mentioned in the instructions so I assume it is for a second fan
To set your temp switch and test if it works, you do the following (if you do not have a water temp guage)
- Turn temp switch knob all the way clockwise setting it to 240F
- Turn on your car and let it war up until the entire top of the rad is hot
- Turn the temp switch knob slowly counter clockwise untill it turns on the fan
- Once your fan turns on (you know the switch it working) turn the knob on the temp switch to the middle which should be 200F (if not already there) and let the fan come on again but let it stay on to see if it turns off once it cools the coolant enough to bring then temp down
- Now that you know the fan comes on and off like it should you can adjust the knob few degrees more or less depending on the temp you want it to come on at (there are no numerical indicators so you have to use common sense)
I have mine set to about 190-195F, it is a few degrees to the left of centre and have not had any issues yet
It is also normal to have the fan stay running after you turn off the car, it will cool off the rad then turn itself off
Hope this helps
240sxfan… i can’t thank you enough. your explaintion was so detailed that i thought a Jap was speaking to me  thanks you very much
now, i was woundering if my old AC fan from my 1992 Coupe would work :?:
Your old A/C fan will work but it does not blow very much air. For 30 bucks you can get yourself a good fan from a junkyard that fits your rad and blows a lot more air. I recommend the ford taurus fan from a 90-95 3.8l V6. It is a little hard to find as most taurus’ you find will be 3.0l but it is definately worth the search.
i researched and researched as much A/C info on our cars and here is what I found.
89-90 240sx with KA24E and all S13 SR20DET:
had a lower rad hose with a temp switch built in that would turn on the A/C electric fan when the A/C was on or the coolant temp reaches 200F
91-93 240sx with KA24DE (including 94 convertabiles):
A/C electric fan was connected to a relay in engine fuse box. When A/C would turn on the ECU would trip the relay and turn on the A/C electric fan. When coolant temp reached 200F the ECU would trip the relay and turn on the A/C electric fan
All second 95+ S14 240sx’s with KA24DE or SR20DET:
A/C electric fan was connected to a relay in engine fuse box. When A/C would turn on the ECU would trip the relay and turn on the A/C electric fan. When coolant temp reached 200F the ECU would trip the relay and turn on the A/C electric fan. Difference here is that there were 2 relay, one for low temp and one for high temp
I have a 93 fastback which uses the relay to turn on the A/C fan. When I swapped in my SR i went with a ford taurus electric fan and used the temp switch, I also kept my A/C when i did the swap. Since the S13 SR does not use the ECU to turn on the A/C fan I had to wire up my fan to override the temp switch whenever the A/C was on. If you require some guidance on hooking up the fan so that it turns on when A/C gets turned on let me know. I don’t have any pics so it will take me a while to write out a step by step and explain everything.
excellent writeups.
