FLR SCCA Winter Road Rally Schedule!

The Finger Lakes Region SCCA Winter Road Rally Series is coming up soon! There will be five regular events starting in December, preceded by a short school / practice rally in November.

These events are a ton of fun. The “time-speed-distance” concept is simple. You have a car and a team of two people. You get a set of instructions that tell you when to leave, where to go, and how fast to drive. Checkpoints are at unknown locations along the route. They know what time you should have arrived, you get points for being early or late. Lowest score wins. It’s not about being fast, it’s about being right. :stuck_out_tongue:

It’s hard to make it sound cool, but believe me, it can be very challenging. Most of the events take place on back roads in the hills around the Finger Lakes. Even when there’s not a foot of snow, it can be tough to maintain speeds on some backwoods dirt road where you can’t see the turns in front of you.

Requirements are pretty straightforward; you need a car with a valid inspection sticker, insurance, drivers license. Snow tires are highly recommended, and you must have a tow rope and reflective triangle just in case. The navigator will want a watch, calculator, pencil and paper, flashlight.

If you have any questions, just ask! Hope to see you there.

cool thanks for the post.

are these “instructions” much different from the DIScover america rally?

They are better

No bullshit, no confusion. No looking for signs that don’t exist. The directions are not meant to confuse you. You always have a mileage to the turn, and a tulip diagram.

I can post a sample later.

in.

I’ll definitely be there, navigating for MXS.

These really are a BLAST…I have so many crazy stories that could be told from our adventures last year.

so in the winter how badly would i fuck up my DD?

About as much as you would fuck it up driving to work in the winter.

so in other words, find a different car to use.

lol.
i might be in for one or 2 of these.

Reasonable ground clearance and tires, and you’ll do fine. There are usually a variety of cars participating. You’ll typically see small FWD’ers, a family sedans/wagons, several AWD cars including a few street driven rally cars (like my dd EVO).

Check out http://www.flr-scca.com/rally/2007/index.html for some of the event results from last year to see some of the cars that came out to play.

Checkpoint slip. You get one of these at every open control. This tells you what should have been your time for this leg.

Time Allowance forms. This is how you are supposed to “make up” time if you get lost, etc.

Hahahahah “caution unmarked deer”

I want in.

lol, yeah…that was my writing. That event had a lot of “caution, potential dog in the road” and stuff like that. So everytime we came to an unmarked animal, I wrote it down. Sometimes we kind of get loopy out there after a few hours. Silly things become REALLY funny.

i want in. but our rally-x car stupidly has no interior. i don’t want to freeze.

fuck.

Snowsuit. Do it.

if Aaron is willing to navigate, I’ll do it…

If I’m not skiing then I’ll prob be in for at least one of these.

can I ride in the back seat?
wait non CRX
