Focusinprogress' XS650 BOBBER build.

I kept my wiring harness EXACTLY THE WAY IT WAS. lol

haha, this is more of a “make this wire go over here instead” type of wiring…there were only two spots that wires were “tee’d” in that we had to snip and move the “tee” to somewhere else to make it work. The harness is/will be otherwise stock, just re-routed.

Good work so far! The test fit photo is epic.

thanks dude! feel free to stop by and check it out next time you’re over at Dan’s…I live right up the street from him

Sounds good. Maybe I’ll stop up when I drop off the parts to get powder coated.

Lol I gotya, because my frame is essentially the same, I need no re-routing. Thanks the lord baby jesus.

I’ve been tinkering a little bit here and there for an hour or two at a time and have a few things coming together…

I extended some wires and shortened a few others to make the routing of the harness work better for where I’ve located everything. I also made a panel in the lunchbox to hold the electrical componants out of the weather and started working on a chain tensioner.

Bump.

lol.

Well, last monday right before I left for vacation Checko came by and helped me chase down some wiring gremlins…and we got the bike running and everything working…

BUT, to get to that point the bike looked like this:

I came home from vacation to find that GV1390 and Checko had re-loomed my entire harness for me and buttoned up a lot of loose ends as far as mounting things and whatnot. They even cut out the brackets I drew up for the tensioner setup(awesome friends rule)…So tonight I’m going to finish the tensioner, clean up the last few things that need it, clean/re-jet the carbs, and do final assembly. Hopefully have it on the road by friday.

3 steps forward and two steps back…story of my life.

So got a whole bunch done yesterday, Checko and Pirite came by to lend a hand and tackled almost all of what was left on the bike. They headed out around 11pm and I kept truckin till about 1:30am alone.

The boys:
installed new banjo bolt pressure switch for front brake
soldered up some extension wires for bar-end turn signals
soldered up some fresh battery cables
tightened up some bolts
ground some of my welds
removed carbs
trimmed some more material from the rear fender for chain clearance

I:
swore a lot
Made the chain tensioner, Checko made a great point that it doesn’t need to be adjustable or have a spring since I have axle adjusters, so I went K.I.S.S. and made a simple stationary one. I even drilled into the back of it and added a grease fitting and releif groove to lubricate the bushing
Extended some wires for a rear brake pressure switch
Bent up some NiCopp brakeline Pirite provided and ran my rear brake line
touched up some welds that were lacking
did final routing of wires and such
discovered I’m an idiot and mounted the bar-end signal (pain if the goddamn nuts) before installing the clutch perch…tried using a different one that didnt need to be slid on, but it doesn’t take up enough of the slack in the cable to operate. FUCK
adjusted chain and aligned rear wheel using chalkline and levels

and last but fuck you: went to turn the key to test signals that were added and kept blowing fuses as soon as I turned the key to “on”…so something happened during assembly where I have a short again. FUCK FUCK FUCK I HATE WIRING.

pics:

Electrical issues blow balls. I hate electrical work period. Soldering/crimping - I’ll do that all day. It’s chasing the gremlins that fucking sucks!

So I made those brackets for nothing? fu!

Correct. All that work for nothing haha

time to pull out the wiring diagrams and trace wires more… and the brake line looks fucking awesome.

So, I’ve found that having my “safety relay” as labeled on the wiring diagram plugged in…blows a fuse…

SO, I unplugged it, and with the ignition on tested both sides of the connector for continuity on each pin.

Here’s what I found:

on relay side I have continuity on both red w/ white tracer, and on red w/yellow tracer

on harness side, I have continuity on ONE red/white tracer, the black(expected), and blue…

I know something isn’t right here…just need to figure out WHAT.

I have the rest of the bike working…the signals work, the brake/tail light work, etc…just need to figure out this safety relay issue and clean/jet carbs…then it’s DONE.

did you post a schematic somewhere?

“safety relay” and BOBBER build don’t seem to go together anyways. lol

LOL. if I understand correctly, I can leave it unplugged and all that’s disabled is electric start…

this is what I’m using:

not gonna join that forum. lol. re-host?
