What do you train in, and what do you like most/least about it?
I’m considering starting in this, but I’m unsure of how to choose a form.

depends on what you like to do, or what you would like to do.
If you want to punch hard and beat people up - Boxing
If you are too scrawny to ever punch hard - Ju Jitsu
Everything else involves self dicipline and stuff…
learn drunken boxing
I take Tae-kwon-do.
I like it because of the footwork. Lots of kicking and balancing and such wich is what I needed work on. Most martial arts will do that though.
I also love the weapons that I can use to whoop ass now.
kenpo
its functional, and i like using a bo
+1. I’ve been curious about taking a martial art to get some exercise. What do you guys recommend as a way to get some regular exercise and maybe gain discipline, confidence, etc as a bonus? Where and how much does it cost?
100 or so a month usually, give or take.
a lot of places have monthly, yearly, and longer contracts. so you sign up monthly you get like 2 classes a week, and then whatever extra classes they have. yearly will usually get you unlimited classes, as well as special training (guest senseis and weapons training… stuff like that)
i suggest going to martialtalk.com and reading there, and then checking out all the local joints. convience is NOT king. you may need to make a 20 min drive to go to a good school, or one that you like. all schools (or atleast the good ones) will offer a couple of free classes. thats a good way to find an art that suits you. go participate and watch some classes at different schools, and make your decision from there.
Are you looking to learn an art, or are you looking to learn survival skills?
that krav joint is shit, or at least the guy i worked with was its the same self defence taught in all the “art” schools… only you get no dicipline and no “why”. i went for a couple free lessons and the meatheads couldnt answer any of my questions. McDojo FTL
http://www.aimos.net/blackbelt/dojos/
this is a good link for finding schools
if you’re just looking for something to help you get in shape while learn a little self defence take boxing. Ive been boxing for a little over a year now, the conditioning will work your ass off and it teaches you how to properly throw punches to get the most power out of it without having to swing like a lumberjack.
Krav Maga is awesome for survival, hand to hand combat. Mix in a little grappling, and you have a sweet combo.
I took Ishen Ryu at the place in transit town. Good place. it is a very straight forward agressive martial art. It was started in Japan. The head sensei ,Jim, his sensei use to train with Bruce Lee. Anywho yeah its a pretty cool place. Definatly worth checking out. They move at a semi slow pace so you really learn the stuff. It takes 3 months to advance a belt. so if you have time on your hands and the dedication, I’d say go there. Just my $.02
I went there for three months, its legit, and pretty serious stuff. Much more practical and useful in the real world than most of the “arts” i’ve seen. The free lessons are made for women and people who have no clue what is going on, you cannot judge krav by that.
im judging by the guy not being able to answer questions about marriage of gravity and shit like that… but that was just that guy, maybe the other trainers dont suck.
I probably should’ve not left this quite so open ended. I’m looking for a new way to get a great work out (I can’t get back into weight training too seriously thanks to the fubar’d shoulder fooball left me with). Combine this with the fact that I’ve always been fasinated with the body control exhibited by those who have mastered some of these arts, and I think I’ve found something that could work for me.
Even when I’m in good shape I’m not a body type that lends itself to flipping around in the air or doing leaping kicks. Looking around online for a few days leads me to think I’d like a form of Kung Fu. I’ve got decent upper body strength, and that art is mostly striking with the hands. Plus I’ve been reading about some of their training techniques, and it seems like vigorous training.
Not that it might be what you are looking for, but there used to be a group doing capoeira at buff state. I havent talked to any of them in a long time to know what the deal is now, but when I used to go, they were incredible, and it definately helped me stay in shape at the time.
I did Krav Maga for a little, it was fun, i had no time for it at the time.
I have dont Muai Thai, it was not taught to me traditionally. My trainer has 2 european and 1 international title to his name, plain and simple he kicks ass…mine… I loved every second of it even when i was getting hurt.
I have done Judo…fun, and painful, but fun.
no complaints…the only complain i had is the Krav maga instructers all seemed jacked on crystal meth
