for you guys that have done frame offs. approximate ballpark cost 86 iroc somewhat ok

I know this is going to be hard to say but just trying to get an idea. 30k? 40k? 50k?Should I just get a 3rd gen book and start adding? Car must be perfect so will not spare any expense. Extreme sentimental car so could care less if its ‘worth it’
looking at probably a supercharged z06 motor for engine.
Derek

It can’t be that bad on an 86 IROC since parts are everywhere it’s not like some 60s mopar

Also will not be doing most of the work myself as I do want it to be perfect lol

that labor cost of having a shop do it just doubled your investment. i was going to say 15-20k, but make that 30-40 having someone else do it.

“investment” ha.

Let me know how doing a frame off on a unibody goes

To strip, media blast, rotisserie it, epoxy prime, and two-stage paint you’ll probably in about $20K - $22K, going from what I’ve seen the Mustang guys do.

Beat me to it.

I know what you mean though.

Edit: To LZ

All depends on if you’re doing a factory restoration or a resurrection/upgrade which is what it sounds like. To just clean the car up and get the body/suspension/paint work done without adding the cost of any custom work you’re probably in the 10-20k range depending on the condition of the car to start with. Mods/upgrades after that will just add to it. Depending on how crazy you want to go, I’d say you’re looking at a 25k-50k car to have it done properly all depending on the upgrades you want to make.

Ive heard <$3k for an acid dip. A real start over!

Yeah, acid-dipping will get you back to square one in a hurry. Eats epoxies, plastic fillers, paints, primers, old ladies, and anything else you care to mention.

i think it would be hard to spend more than 25k restoring a 3rd gen. ive bought and sold many of those cars and parts over the years and theyre actually quite easy.

i would reconsider doing any kind of acid dipping. its pretty hard to get that stuff completely out of everywhere and can affect final product if you cant get it out. blasting is the best way to do it. (this is coming out of the mouth of doug snow, who has been in the auto body profession for a while and owns his own shop. i would reccommend him to anyone.

suzukiriderman does media blasting and owns a rotisserie

I know, which is why I would media blast if it was my car. Not only that, but in some cases you’ll weaken the metal itself. For a car that is very “young” and made of lighter grades of sheetmetal, I wouldn’t try it. Suzukiriderman is the prefered media guy here.

Please post a build thread, I don’t think i’ve ever seen a third gen done up to the level you’re talking. Supecharged Z/06 engine? :naab:

Start the engine and body at the same time.

Get the body stripped down, blasted and painted. Probably 10K right there.

I wouldn’t do a supercharged Z06 if you’re referring to the LS7. They have known issues with cracking sleeves once blown. What you can do that would be very powerful, strong and not as expensive is an iron block 6.0L. Get the 6.0L block bored and stroked to a 408, slap some L92 heads with an LS3 intake and a blower and you’ll get 700+hp all day long. Probably looking at 8K for that engine set up. Now you’ll need a tranny and a built rear to hold that. Maybe another 6K there. You’ll need a solid fuel system and lines so maybe another 2K installed.

I’m guessing 25K-30K by the time you’re done and you’d have a sweet third gen.

Basically what im looking to do is have an 86 Iroc that looks bone stock like it did when I had it in hs that runs hi 9’s and can drive it to rochester and back if I want to. Money isn’t really an object as I want it to be perfect to the point I was looking at buying a ~ 10k mile car and stripping it. Remember this is the car I drove in hs then found 14 yrs later. I’ve worked dang hard in mylife and this is one thing I want to send my money on. Even might put that ZL1 on hold unless they come out with a #'d one then ill have to get one!
Any thoughts on a timeframe as well? Is 6 mos too short of time?
engine options/ thoughts/ ideas are welcomed but must fit under a stock Iroc hood.

Also remember I need new weatherstriping, carpets, complete interior, etc. I know NOS fog light are $250 now. Im thinking 40k or so

Realistically it can be from $20k to $30k. Figure $10k for media blast (see Jessie at Blast Off), prep, and paint. If you are doing solid colors and nothing fancy other than adding the IROC stickers. Those years were pretty straight not requiring a ton of finishing.
Engine, well that’s all up in the air. I like Ultradrivers thought on it.

And like you said, this isn’t an investment, because you will NEVER get that money back in the car. But it’s your car, so do what you want with it. You better have a build thread for it!

Procharged LS1 swap with a 4l80e

I’d advise against doing that extensive of a restore on a car thats going to be tracked in the 9’s. Too much varible that can end with the wall, and you out 15 k on a chassis that isnt repairable because its unibody.

For reference we had one of the s10 guys devestate his truck. shattered the powerglide case, broke the start ear off the motor, destroyed the truck entirely. Just saying hes out a chassis / body too, but its considerably less than a 15k shell.

and s10s have a full frame
