Forbes 10 best and worst cities for commuters

So I guess that a mass exodus out of a city is good for something…#1 in the country holla

i can vouch for it sucking in atlanta…what a joke that was trying to drive there in rush hour!

edit buffalo just “looks” sooooooo poor compared to those other cities with those pictures (which it is lol)

Commuting is so easy here!

Im surprised DC wasn’t #1

 Yet there are still idiots who think we need a good mass transit system. :zong:

Of cities with over 500,000 commuters, fewer people spend an hour or more getting to work in Buffalo than anywhere else in the country.

Interesting statement, given that Buffalo’s population is only about 275,000.

I wouldnt be surprised if buffalo had 500k commuters though, I could easily see the north and southtowns having as many downtown workers as the city itself.

Yeah that could be.

I always laugh at people who say Buffalo and Rochester have bad traffic and such a long commute. Thank you Forbes for backing me up.

Considering Erie County had a population of 921,390 in 2006 I’d believe the 500k estimate for Buffalo and it’s suburbs. Plus I know lots of people who commute from outside Erie County.

This is one of the those two sided awards though. Yay we’ve got very little traffic, but it’s because we aren’t growing. 10 years ago Atlanta didn’t have traffic problems but their low taxes and business friendly politicians cause their economy to grow faster than the roads could support.

Buffalo on the other hand has an infrastructure of roads left over from when it was much bigger and it’s economy was booming.

Yeah when I was looking for the population number I came across some historical data. >300,000 in Buffalo in 1900 and >500,000 in 1940. :crap:

Is that suppose to be more than 300,000 or less than?

The city itself has a population of 257,758 (2006 Estimate)[6], and the metropolitan area 1,170,111 (2000 Census)[7], the 46th largest in the United States.

interesting

By 1900, Buffalo was the 8th largest city in the country, [9] and went on to become a major railroad hub,[10] the largest grain-milling center in the country, [11] and the home of the largest steel-making operation in the world. [12] The latter part of the 20th Century saw a reversal of fortunes: by the year 2000 the city had fallen back below its 1900 population levels, steel mills had closed, Great Lakes trade rerouted, and the city was becoming poorer and poorer.

20 more years of increased fossil fuel usage and we’ll be right back up there, thanks to global warming. 100 degrees with 99% humidity for 6 months a year in the south is going to get played out.

There are lots of cooler climate places to live that don’t have our fucked political system though. Even if the south hits 120 people will find somewhere better than NY to move to.

Just using shorthand since you would read > as “greater than” I was saying that the population was greater than 300,000 in 1900 and greater than 500,000 in 1950.

Could be a good opportunity though, to market on an improved climate and cheap housing. A few grand in state taxes might be worth it when you save 200k on your house. The right people could easily make it work. Hell, you have places like Citi already using us like they would India to a lesser extent, moving white collar jobs from bigger cities and offering them at 1/3 the salary.

This, of course, means it will fail miserably. Oh well, I’ll be in San Diego by then.

I’m always amazed how much people complain about the traffic here. I’ve never been stressed out about it.

Just think about a person you know that complains and goes nuts in buffalo traffic, now imagine that person driving elsewhere. They’d die.

no just wondering since the trend of posts here misuse that symbol

ie. “looking for a car >$3k”

Our traffic is awesome here. I love being able to be from alden to the arena in like 20 minutes

I have no idea, my 1st grade teacher taught me that and it still crosses my mind everytime I use/see it

lol that’s the same way I learned it. Every now and then I still get the urge to draw teeth on my inequality signs!
