Ford Demos "MyKey" V. Controlling your Teen

a new way to try and program how your kid drives. I don’t have any kids but would any of you do this to your teenager? I rather teach them limitations myself than have a computer try to control them.

Anything to get out of being a real parent

I think its great.

I also happen to think that staged licenses and limited power/displacement MC license are great.

Why does my kid need to go above 80 mph?

I’m sure they would already be perfect in every regard in the first place, but why allow them to tempt fate?

MyKey may not be a big hit with the 16-21 crowd, but we’ve got a good feeling that parents will love it.

Somehow I can see parents giving this MyKey thing too much control over their child’s driving. You’ve still got a lot of instructing to do as a parent to see that your child becomes a safe driver, and I think some parents might mistakenly let the MyKey do all the work. Don’t get me wrong, the program has good intentions, but I think some parents will overlook many other distractions (i.e. cell phone texting) and think this program is the solution to all of their worries when their kid is behind the wheel without them there.

I feel bad for all of the controls I will have over my child that my parents didn’t have over me.

Its a great idea, but do you think the parents are actually going to be able to use the system… I know my parents have a really nice nav system and it took them a week or two to figure out how to work the radio.

thats a damned good point.

honestly though, this is probably a good thing. My parents never really told me how to drive (nor do I know too many people that learned from their folks, it was mostly seat time while their parents/licenced driver were in the car)… the old man gave me basic pointers, and the trick to parellel parking… learned all the ‘legal’ stuff from driving school and such

+1. Hell, take it a step farther. Take that smart license we’re all getting and put a card reader right in the dash.

If you have less than X years driving experience you’re limited to Y speed

If you don’t have a license the car doesn’t start period.

I’d consider it, and that in no way gets me out of being a “real parent.” The older ones among us remember how we were whenever we got the keys at 16-17, and the younger ones are on this site daily giving us great examples of why MyKey is a good idea.

Yep, our 9 and 10 year old will be taught to drive properly, learn on a stick, avoid situations, and eventually get sent to a 1-2 day school. However, there’s still that magical time right after you get your license that you completely lose your mind. I bet every single one of us on here can tell some sort of harrowing tale of bravado combined with stupidity that they did at 16-17 years old in mom/dad’s car. I also bet a good number of us can easily say “damn, I’m lucky to still be alive.” Yeah, I’d like to try to avoid those possibilities with my kids.

Would I use it immediately? Not until I’m sure that they’re doing dangerous shit, and there are other devices out there that can monitor that

They should make cars with cell phone jammers so they don’t work in the car. Muhahah.

i fear some of these teenage girls with their phones above the steering wheel , trying to text and look at the highway…

and and turn off the radio

Seems like a good idea, especially since no one wants to take responsibility for their own actions anymore.

For those of you that think this is great, think of this. Kids are creative.

Can’t speed anymore? Ok good, I’'ll just do e-brake 180’s at 55, you really taught me.

Does the computer stop burnouts? Oh wait its a focus  but seriously, it doesn’t eliminate stupidity, nothing will.

And yes, I would have no problem if an automaker made one of those an option for any time the car wasn’t in park.

Yes they are, which is why a responsible parent stays involved. That’s truly the only thing that eliminates stupidity, or at least attenuates it.

Gotta start really early with teaching that every action has a repercussion. Our kids understand it well.

Except jamming cell phones is illegal in the US

Do you think they make a fob that will stop you from putting metal lunch trays under the rear tires of a focus? :stuck_out_tongue:

Whats next, a key that will keep their slut daughters from taking off their clothes in the back seat of the car?

Yeah…it looks a lot like this.
