on a somewhat topic-related note:
i was putting together some reports today and i came across a sales tax summary for 1997 – 87 octane = $1.25/gal
It’s not a bad idea at first glance, but one big issue. Everything we use in the US comes on a truck. Driving up diesel demand in this country could be disasterous to the economy. And from what I’ve read Biodiesel has an even worse problem with gelling in cold temps than regular diesel. Of course, it wouldn’t be unlike the government to mandate something that wasn’t ready for prime time use (read, ETHANOL mixes in gasoline).
In case you haven’t noticed, it’s not just SUVs/pickups that are gas hogs now. Cars are in a HP war like nothing we’ve ever seen. What’s an EVO get MPG, real world, when you drive it spirtedly in mostly city driving? Same with an STi, one of the many Hemi powered Chrysler products, V8 impala etc etc.
I think congress should pass a law that says no car should have more than 150 hp. No one needs more power than that, and it would force car manufactures to put their cars on a diet. When the new VW Gti comes in over 3100 lbs you know cars have the same problem with weight as Americans.
*disclaimer (I don’t really believe this, I’m just throwing it out there as a counter point to the arguement of “big trucks should be outlawed because they use to much gas”. That’s a slippery slope you HP/sports minded drivers really don’t want to head down).
Who said the gov’t has to mandate BioDiesel? Not me. I said anything classified as a Truck (SUVs, Pickups, Conversion vans, RVs, etc…) should be mandated to run on diesel. Once the clean diesel law goes into effect you’re going to see a HUGE influx of european and japanese diesel cars and SUVs anyway. Shit I’ll most likely pick up a Merc or BMW diesel sedan in 2 years. Then by getting biodiesel movements going around the country you’ll be able to reduce some of the new demand on conventional (commercial) diesel, maybe even eliminate it.
By doing this, you’ll lower gasoline prices, make vehicles more efficient, reduce pollution, and possibly help out local communities by reusing waste products and converting them into fuel.
EVO gets 18-22, but there are FAR more Expeditions on the road than EVOs. You know as well as I do that there are more gas hog Trucks and SUVs than performance cars.
It’s not just about simple MPG, the the ammount of X that uses Y. 200,000 Performance cars getting 18 mpg uses less gas than 2,000,000 SUVs getting 20 MPG.
The government always looks at it like that though. Look at emission testing. Most of our cars would pass except we don’t have the required sensors installed. And what about cars that are older and exempt for the testing? They run a lot worse than my car, but my car won’t pass because I converted it to OBDI. The government always looks at it in broad, black and white terms.
I’m not quite sure how that applies to the topic or exactly what you’re trying to say?
Socialize the oil industry!!!
I’m just pissed about prices.
I don’t think we have to look much farther than Cuba and the former USSR to see where socialized industry gets your economy.
Don’t worry joe, someday you’ll get it.
 or you could just clarify your point, b/c it sounds like you just bitching about it being hard to modify a vehicle and pass inspection.
glad I am not the only one that thought it was a dumb idea.
