I’m selling a perfectly good DirecTV HD Tivo. 250GB hard drive, power cable and remote comes with it. We ended up stepping up to the HR21’s in our house, and this is collecting dust.
I need to call and see how much it will be for directv to upgrade my service and i might take this from you.
Do you hvae to have the tivo service or can you just use it as the dvr?
Well, I’ve been trying to look at my billing history, specifically back when I was using this, but there are some issues with the Verizon site (I’ve got combined billing). However, all I remember is paying for HD service, and DVR service, which is normal. I don’t believe there was a separate “Tivo” charge.
I think it’s $10 for HD, and somewhere around $6 for DVR.
Ya I nneed to add the hd service but I have to deal with them to come out and upgrade my dish too
I am a DirecTV technician. This receiver is not compatible with the new HD 5LNB Dish, so you would not need an upgrade for this. All this will receive for HD are channels 70-79 and you will be charged the same $10 monthly fee for HD as everyone else receiving over 150 HD channels for $10. Also you will NOT be charged a separate TiVo charge just the standard DVR charge of $5.99/month. Unless you have the premier package, DVR service is free with the Premier package.
Yep, just got back to this thread. There’s definitely the trade-off. This worked fine with my 3LNB dish, however the channels were limited. Strangely, even though I picked up a LOT more channels using the HR21, I still miss the Tivo interface. Can’t stand the HR21 interface.
Can I use this without a HD service and just replace my existing box with it?
My current setup is a 3LNB reciever with decent programming but the box is a old (not even a vizio remote selection in it) style small box with co-ax so I think just upgrading that will help me out a ton.
You can use this without HD service, but you will see zero difference in picture quality on SD stations. Also you would still have to pay $5.99 for DVR service regardless as soon as you activated it on your account. The only advantage would be that you could have a good roof antenna installed and receive free HD Over The Air and it would be integrated into the TiVo guide and recordable at no extra cost, other than the antenna installation. I could install one for you for $120 installed if this is the route you go.
