G Road Test in a Modified Vehicle

Yeah you have to have both hands on the wheel when turning, and the car has to be in gear while making a turn, if its in neutral they will fail you.

If I am going 80 And have to slow down, I normally brake to 60, downshift to 3rd and let the clutch out smoothly, then by this point the engine braking kicks in and I shift into 2nd and then first, but don’t let the clutch out in 2nd because Id have to push it back in half a second later to not stall out. Is that acceptable? I see it as going through the gears and stopping safely as listed on their check sheet, but then again, that check sheet is vague about things. I could brake lighter and sooner just to pop in 2nd longer, or pop in 2nd for a second if that will make them happy.

Why don’t you call and ask?! Who the fuck on SON is a driving instructor / drivetest employee?

I took my G1 to G2 road test in a 5spd impreza wagon (stock, but still manual) and had this hard-ass jamaican mofo testing me, bugger didn’t know wtf I was doing… I’d be coming to a red light and pop it into to neutral just shortly before stopping (you know, so i don’t stall) and he gave me shit 4 times over about it… What did he want me to do, heel-toe downshift from 5th to 2nd everytime? lol

nope they want to see you use every single gear wether you are upshifting or downshifting…

I know full of bs it is but thats what they want to see

PS. my aunt is a driving instructor
this is how I know a bit about it as she coached me on the do’s and dont’s

lol i like this answer

to expand on this, it must be in gear while in an intersection, at all times, as well as waiting at an intersection, the idea is that you are ready to move if ‘shit goes down’

(my step father has been an instructor for 15+ years, and currently instructs AZ big rig)

you may get away with shifting gears in a big rig 18+ gear bastard though… never asked

It’s a cluster fuck right now? I won’t get anywhere, especially with a 15 month backlog to attend to? Everyone has to go through this shit, it’s a car club, everyone drives., and the answers I have been getting
are pretty solid for the most part.

I tried to take my G test with my modified car at the time but since I had a chip in my windsheild they didnt let me take the test. So I took the test in my moms sunflower which is also 5 spd and passed with flying colours, he told me to just look in my mirrors a bit more.
Only things you have to remember are:

  • Make sure to always have the car in a gear, NEVER in neutral
  • Always have the car in a gear while making a left turn through an intersection. So either stay in first the whole way though or switch into second before passing the stop bar
  • downshift, this is how you properly drive standard

Thats all I can think of. For everyone that says to drive auto in the test. You suck :stuck_out_tongue:

Dude. Honestly. If you can get ANY unmodified vehicle. Do it with that. It just saves the headaches. You never know who your examiner will be, or what they will be like. I took an '06 Duramax Crew Cab long box in Orangeville. Bitch made me do a 3-point turn on a residential street. I told her it’s not possible. Ended up being a 5-point turn. She was quite embarrassed lol.

I remember leaving the lot and her practically yelling at me telling me that just because I drive a huge truck dosn’t mean I don’t have to stop and all this crap. I was quite confused as to why she said that. But yeah.

Unmodified vehicle. The smaller the better. Be comfortable in the car. CONSTANTLY check your mirrors enthusiastically so they see. If yoru not sure to signal or not, signal. Drive in the RIGHT hand lane on any street that has more than one lane in your direction. You’ll pass hands down. The test was a fucking joke.

Auto is not a must. Yet, it leaves a lot less room for error. Good luck brotha.

Let me break it down for everybody.

The guys or ladies who do the test could care less about your car, you won’t impress them with your mad shifting skills or your turbo going woosh. They are paranoid about life as is. Even driving an automatic econoshitbox will make them have a heart attack.

Make your life easier and do it in some automatic slow pos that’s quiet. I made sure to drive ultra smooth to the point I was complimented when doing my G as never having someone drive so well, DO THAT and you’ll pass. Right after that I was balling through the corners and on ramps all happy to get my license bwahahahahaha. Suckers.

/thread (srsly)

LOL!! I can’t WAIT to go for my G test in my little machine, heel toe every downshift it is!

what he said…

This is exactly what i did. I used an automatic toyota corrola (it was a driving school’s car). If you go automatic, you leave lees room for error. Just make sure you do what they want to see, like checking your mirrors every couple of seconds and you should pass with ease. I made sure i didint do anything wrong becasue it sucks if you have to go back and do it again, just get it right the first time, you’ll save yourself some money and time.

Yeah, I’m just doing a paradigm shift of sorts in preperation. I’m trying to see the world as a granny does through the windshield. My focus has always been on race technique, throttle and brake control, and technical blah blah. So certain granny things are alien to me-using the wheel like a granny, and not like a race driver. I learned how to drive from Best Motoring and Option DVD’s unfortunately. And it’s the reason why I learned things like left foot braking before parallel parking, and has probably saved my ass from disaster ous situations, and got me the Nick name Mario Andretti along the way.

My first real driving experience? I was tossed a set of keys and told to keep up on Finch at 4, following someone weaving in and out of traffic. So yeah, I just gotta focus on developing more of the granny habits.

^^Yea you pretty much need to drive like a granny lol. There are some things that they might fail you automatically like speeding in school zone.

Don’t take a manual trans vehicle. They can be really strict on rpms, and shifting while turning. I have my G test sheet close by, and once you go to the manual section, rules become more anal. Your best bet is an automajic car. Also make sure your horn and all light work or you wont be eligable to even take the test.

I have never seen a manual sheet before. Could you scan it? I have decided against doing it in the 240. Not worth the hassle. I have a working horn and signals, all of that jazz. Just the headlights aren’t always running like a slut if you catch my drift.

I tried the whole not shifting around a turn and shifting before a turn business. On full size intersections the 1st gear is really dragged out, but it’s fine elsewhere for the small turns. Wouldn’t say that’s a problem. Really curious about what their faildar is looking to detect (RPM’s stuff for example). Would be ace if you could get a scan or photo.

Maybe they really ride your sack about that shit in a G test? I had no such harassment during my G2 test, other than what I mentioned above about me dropping it to neutral before stopping.
