Garage Floor Coating/Covering

This is going to be my next project. There’s no way I can use tile as there is a raised spot stamped into the concrete, and there is a broken spot near the corner. My only choices will be paint or epoxy. I’m most likely going to use a Rust-Oleum kit. I’ve been reading the reviews and they are mixed. The main complaint is that the box won’t cover the amount of space it claims. That has a lot to do with how porous the concrete is, and how well the prep is. The prices seem reasonable, and the before/after pictures from all of the guys doing the reviews have me sold. Even a lot of the guys that complain are left with a floor that looks 10x better. I don’t really care for those “race tiles” that guys get with their generic checkerboard pattern. It makes the garage look too dark imo. I’ll probably end up with a silver finish with a lot of metalflake. I’m not sure if I’m going to do the entire garage yet or if I’m going to do the area where I won’t be working in. Most likely just half for now. I’ll post up pictures when I’m done, with all the costs, prep, and pros and cons that I see.

Looking forward to your results!!

I’m trying to upload pics but nyspeed says the files are too large.

Thank you JayS!

Here’s a pic of the outside. It’s big, 49’x24’. Can fit 5 cars easy, but i’m pretty sure I’m only doing the floor on the right side (for now). There is a bay on the left and I want that to be the “work” area so the rest of the garage doesn’t get filthy dirty.

This is a section of damage. The corner piece has lifted up. I’m not fixing it, I’m just going to paint over it.

There are a few cracks in the rest of the section but the concrete is perfectly flat. Pretty sure the previous owner put some silicone in the cracks so that will have to come out since the Rust-Oleum won’t stick to it, from what I’ve heard.

This photo is looking in from the left bay. I’m going to coat from the far wall, over to about a foot beyond where the car is parked.

Looks like a nice setup! Hope to get photos of my new garage soon.

Choko and I did mine a few years ago concrete was pitted and in bad shape…We leveled it with more concrete did some acid washing couple coats of base and clear. Used the Rustoleum kit or should I say kits if I was to do it again I would definitely buy the stuff in bulk offline instead of from home depot.

I’m selling the house next year but how screwed the garage floor was I assume it will add some value I think was into supplies around $600ish

It’s been rock solid though hot car tires, e85, brake fluid, and dropped tools no issues

My HF mechanics seat has served me well thus far.

LZ that looks great. Really the look Id like to achieve.

Bulk buying seems the way to go.

The data sheet says 844-847 sq.ft./gal of coverage, whats your actual usage?

I was just thinking the same thing, I use it to roll under my car on the 4 post that I can only lift about 55" with the car on top.

That floor looks great BTW, makes me consider doing mine, but the cost deters me. My floors are not terrible, but just a lot of scrapes from the previous owner’s sleds. Your garage looks to be a 12 x 20? I’ve got two 20’ x 20’ garages to do, which would be $2K in material, plus my time, and I could f@ck it up, which tells me leave well enough alone.

You can see it in this picture in front of my son’s sweet GT3. LOL

Would a good sealer go pretty far in preventing oil stains? Clean, etch, seal? I was at home depot today and saw the sealer but it made no mention about being used alone (as in only used before the epoxy, but that might just be how it’s marketed). It might be a good stop gap until funds can be allocated to that job. Which may be never once the barn gets built.

Don’t cheap out on sealer. I get mine every her from a suply center i Tonwanda down the street from Gander Mountain. Expensive, nasty, but quality product. I roll it for coverage.

I did a bit of painting over the weekend. Here’s a few before/after pics. It doesn’t show too much of a difference. The walls weren’t too bad, since they were covered in hundreds of pictures. The hard part was removing the thousands of staples. Each pic had 4-6 staples

Here are some before pics:

Here is an after pic with the lights on. It’s very bright inside now:

I bought 4 boxes of this stuff. I really hope it’s all I need. This shit gets expensive!

I’m going to let the paint dry for a week, and next weekend I’m going to degrease the floor and get it ready for a skim coat of concrete. I don’t expect a perfect finish because the one corner is raised up a bit, but I’m optimistic that it will look tons better.

Is your floor all pitted or something?

There are pits in a few small areas and a bunch of shallow cracks, that this stuff “should” fill.

Will that resurfacer act as a painted top coat?

I don’t believe so. It’s just concrete. It’s designed to smooth out the existing concrete. It’s a step that you can skip depending on how smooth your floor is to begin with.
