garage floor alternatives to epoxy?

well, i cleaned out my garage today and i think id like to put something down to help keep things cleaner looking and protect the concrete a little better. I know that if i spend some money i can get a good 2 part epoxy but lets not go down that road since im looking for other ideas/alternatives.

Can i get large floor mats and if so where? what kinda material and such? Its a large 2car garage, i dont have the measurements on hand.

There was a guy on wnyoffroad, that does concrete refinishing. It was really really cool looking. first they grind the top layer off to get a good surface, then they die it with something. He said it will never absorb oils either, by far the best looking finish I have ever seen.

found it.

I have nothing to do with this guy, or his business, just trying to help out.

garagejournal.com (look in the flooring section, lots of ideas)

A lot of people like the garage mats they sell at samsclub. I can not recall the brand off the top of my head. Comes in a coin pattern and a straight raised line pattern (directs the water out of the garage, assuming your garage is sloped).

or you could do racedeck.com but that would be a lot more expensive

Just out of curiosity, have you looked into how much it would cost to use epoxy on that large of a surface?

and p.s. Whatever happened with that job?

I would estimate large two car garage $2,500 +/- a couple $100.

I like that. I’m not exactly sure what that process is called but I think they added copper to the mix.

Wow. I wouldn’t mind doing my kitchen like that. lol

Ya ive seen some better ones inside houses actually with cool designs on them… ill try to find some more pics

i did my garage floor with a 2 part epoxy… it looks great, but it isnt functional, and now i kind of wish i had not done it…

It dents with jackstands (ie if you look at it the right way, you can see the little L’s where teh corner of my jackstand impressed into the epoxy)

it has chipped when stuff was dropped on it (i dropped a large breaker bar, and a pice of it chipped off, it took a tiny bit of concrete with it, so i dont totally blame the epoxy, but still LAME)

you cant mig weld on it… the sparks/slag burn the epoxy leaving tiny burn marks and slag embedded in the floor

if i could do it over i would do race deck… its infinetly easier to lay down and is much more durable…

and before anbyody asks, yes i prepped the floor VERY well, i used a floor sander to grind the entire floor down, then went back at all the low spots with a hand grinder…

and THEN i acid etched the floor…

The flooring style up above is Terrazo flooring… its the same as 2 part epoxy, but they add in decorative metal and acid to color the concrete… best left to proffesionals, its a BITCH to get to look that nice… (ive seen DIY turn out bad)

i love the look, but i wonder how expensive it is. I may have to get a quote.

i start on monday. I wanna try to avoid epoxy because the maintanance and the slim chance it could lift/peel even if done right.

Ah shit. Congrats. Do you know where you’re working yet?

lol nope. im supposed to go to plant 24 so im not sure.

Just put a single component water based clear down. I sell one that’s a satin finish so it’s not shiny or slippery. Theres no mixing of anything, just roll 2 coats and let it dry. It’s like $20 a gallon and covers 150-250sq ft depending on what kind of shape the floors in. You’ll clean the floor real well first with an oil/grease emulsifier, rinse extremely well and let dry. Then roll a coat on, 6hrs later hit it again and it can be driven on in 48hrs. You just put a maintenance coat on it every couple years or when the finish gets super dull. If you want to add color you can mix in some water based floor paint and it makes a floor stain.

That sucks to hear you’re having that many problems but the epoxy I sell wouldn’t have done that  I just sold a floor to a farm equipment dealer in springville that’s going to have huge tractors and shit on it. General mills has my floor epoxy and they run fork lifts over it all day long. The flight decks of naval carriers are coated with the epoxy I sell and they’re rated at like 15000 take offs and landings. Lol, and one last one, titleist golf balls are coated in the epoxy clear.

Buying from local specialty shops > the internet.

Ryan knows his epoxy. lol

I got my floor at www.floorjunkies.com

It is like the racedeck but a lot cheaper. Yes it is made in China but mine is looking good. My kickstand on the 800 pound bike doesn’t even dent it. There are 144 ponts underneath each 1 sq. foot tile that touch the ground. No way it will give. If you want to see it in person, let me know.

Interested.
