Gas Fireplace Insert's

Like it says … i have a fire place that i cant use the real way so i would like to throw a insert in there …would like to know about both vented and ventless …looking to spend about 500-600

also if anyone has a hook up let me know

thanks Mike

Get a vented. I just ripped out my ventless (it came with the house). They are bad for your home. Not only do they smell slightly, but ventless will dump tons of humidity/water into the air in your home. If you run a ventless long enough in your house you will eventally be able to see the rafters in the ceiling through the drywall. Vented will cost you more, due to the stainless steel piping needed for the chimney, but it is the only way to go in my opinion. Sorry I dont have any hook ups for ya, but there are tons of places out there, start getting some quotes… at least then you can check to see if someone is hooking you up then too.

Good Luck

What he said. I did a lot of research for my mom when she had one put in and vented is definitely the way to go, especially if you plan to run it very much at all. If you’re going to run it for an hour or two a week just for the “look” of a fireplace you can probably get away with ventless, but any more than that and the humidy becomes a problem.

Need more info. Size of fireplace? Status of the chimney?

And for 500-600 bones you won’t get anything more than a set of gas logs (vented or vent-free), unless it’s from Home Depot or something. And if that’s the case I wish you the best of luck with it.

And vent-free is great, but only if you use it as it’s meant to be used… Hour here. Hour there. And it has to be a decent brand. You will have issues otherwise.

Both have their ups and downs.

EDIT_

A decent vented insert (natural vent) will run you about $2200 - $2500 installed. They start around $1700 - $2000 in materials.

Vent free inserts start around $1500 installed. They are about $1200 - $1300 in materials.

Gas logs are around $500 - 900 for a decent set with heat (either style). You can always go with a ‘dual listed’ set and run it vented OR vent-free and switch it up. You can set your damper at any setting you want.

Vented. Only way to go

my dad installed a vented in our house in a weekend… still works great… still mad he wouldnt let me hook the clapper to it though

could i vent threw the chimney??

edit:

I will get all the sizes and such tomorrow

as for the status of the chimney… i really dont know when i got the house there was a wall covering the fireplace up I took it down and really liked the look of it … but I was told the resion there was a wall there was b/c the chimney it self droped 1/2inch when they put in the basement … i really dont know at all I want to have someone come out to look at it but dont know how much that would run me

ill get some pic up tomorrow

Yes.

On most every gas natural vent (or b-vent) insert you only need to run a single four inch liner.

If it’s direct vent, it usually calls for dual 3 inch liners.

And you do NOT have to use stainless steel liners. You can run aluminum with a gas unit.

And chimney inspections run about $50, unless it’s swept too which would be closer to $100. And if it needs a camera run through it you are at a couple hundred bucks.
