Get used to high gas prices.

Time for official shift ecomodding thread!

Last year I did about 30k miles from june-december. Thise year Im on track to do 40k+, Im going to have to get a TDI of some sort asap. At the same time I have to see how much of a tax write off my travel expenses will be, i spend 20k+ a year in travel expenses.

I want to build a strange automobile for fuel efficiency. Third gen firebird, because they have surprisingly low coefficient of drag and are somewhat light weight for what it is. Mercedes 4 or 5 cylinder turbo diesel and LT1 T56 trans. Rear end will have 2.79 gears. Low rolling resistance tires on 15 or 16" light weight aero wheels. Then do a full belly pan, diffuser, weight reduction, ect. Its a silly dream but I gotta think of something while pewping when I forget to take a magazine in.

I just managed 37mpg on my last tank. I was happy. Oh and about poopin with no mag. I’m a firm believer that the invention of the smart phone has greatly increased ones productivity on the toilet.

magazines are for the couch, not the toilet. when i go poop, i poop. i dont go poop to sit there and read magazines.

Prolly contributes to your mental deficiencies. Reading on the toilet is perhaps the most productive way to do it. Increase your knowledge while relieving your bowel-edge.

i read all the time, i just dont enjoy sitting on the shitter for longer then i have to.

you also have no reason to be in a thread that relates to gas, that goes in cars on the road… that you do not have or most likely because of youre handicaps cannot drive… specialki you

I hurt my O-ring shitting too fast. I take my time now. Its a bitch getting old. And I can’t afford or operate this so called smart phone.

I’ve always been impressed with the milage people manage with the turbo LS swapped 3rd gens. A diesel 3rd gen would be boss though.

Dirtymax!

Does the higher cost of diesel get offset by the higher MPG? Just wondering as I saw today, diesel was like $4.27 at Hess.

A little bit but not much I wouldnt think. If your average commuter car gets 25-30mpg highway and the average VW TDI is getting around 50mpg diesel would have to be basically twice as expensive as 87 for it to not be worth it.

good idea in theory, but a dmax is expensive and way too big. That and you need the ECU and other systems to run it. Mechanically injected diesels ftw. (even though I own a dmax)

fine, i’ll channel Wayne and say “DETRIOT”

I personally think its crap that they charge more for diesel just because you get better MPG’s with it. Diesel fuel is made from the leftovers of making gasoline. So therefor Diesel fuel should be cheaper than gas.

Think about what you just said, its made from the leftovers of making gasoline (whether that is true or not idk, bc idk how fuel is processed to be honest) but assuming thats true then diesel takes two processes to make so in theory it should cost more. If its “made” from the leftovers which already went through a process then it takes twice as long to produce, correct?

Knowledge to the rescue!

Why is diesel more expensive than gasoline? Here’s the official answer, from the Energy Information Administration:

Until several years ago, the average price of diesel fuel was usually lower than the average price of gasoline. In some winters when the demand for distillate heating oil was high, the price of diesel fuel rose above the gasoline price. Since September 2004, the price of diesel fuel has been generally higher than the price of regular gasoline all year round for several reasons. Worldwide demand for diesel fuel and other distillate fuel oils has been increasing steadily, with strong demand in China, Europe, and the U.S., putting more pressure on the tight global refining capacity. In the U.S., the transition to low-sulfur diesel fuel has affected diesel fuel production and distribution costs. Also, the Federal excise tax on diesel fuel is 6 cents higher per gallon (24.4 cents per gallon) than the tax on gasoline.

To elaborate on what Vlad posted think about it this way. Everything moves by something powered by diesel fuel. Sure there are a lot of gasoline powered cars and trucks that consumers drive, but all industry is driven by various machines that all burn diesel. So with greater demand comes higher price. I think it sucks since I own a duracrack, but oh well nothing you can do about it.
