Heres my 91 talon tsi awd project.(link to a few pics below)
I’ve deceided to start from the ground up on this projeect. All of the suspension components such as control arms and subframes, have been sandblasted and powdercoated, all bushings have been replaced with E.S. poly bushings, and i’ve also put a set of K-Sport coilovers on it. All of the normal stuff such as ball joints and wheel bearings have also been replaced. next on the list is to get all the body work done (which is minimal) and paint it. For the motor i’m not sure who i want to get to do the head work but i’ll probably be running something like HKS 272’s or similar cams with ti retainers and the Kiggly behive style valve springs and a built bottom end of which i’m not sure what i want to use yet. i’m not trying to do this twice and i’m on a limited budget like alot of us are so don’t worry if i dont’ have updates on this everyday.
sick. ive seen it in person. Cant wait until u get it done. Money owns you.
Your wernt kidding. thats really a ground up project. good luck
anyone know where i can get some rear subframe bushings without payin 450 for them from shearer? i’d love to get the shearer aluminum bushings but i dont’ think thats going to be in the budget anytime soon.
Measure, find someone with a CNC mill, and go to town.
that would be ideal but my buddy’s pap has a lathe and we might try to make some on that. something fun to try evn if it doens’t work out
i’m hoping that i’ll get the car back on the ground this weekend. i got my last pieces back from the powdercoater and i’m jsut waiting for advance to get my wheelbearings. i’ll try to get some pictures up probably sunday or monday.
got some more stuff done this past week. cleaned up the underside of the car a little and got it back on all four wheels for now.
Looks pretty slow? Are you planning on making a demo car or something w/that roll cage? For real ;).
Seriously though dude… apparently there’s a CNC machine on campus. Get me a CAD file and the materials and a few bucks and I’ll get your bushings. They’re supposed to make some flanges for me
heres some pics of the cage i built for it
i already took care of the bushings. not as good as aluminum but its better than stock. but if i can get ahold of a subframe i’ll draw up a bushing on pro/e for ya. but anyhow trevor when are we gettin a tig? haha
looks great keep up the good work
nice touch on the gusset too:bigthumb:
haha thanks i don’t think it will do too much tho. i want to get my hand on some flat stock and tie the cage to te a and b pillars that should stiffen things up a bit
looking good Gombos !
hell yah Gumbie looking good man, can’t wait for the summer :bigthumb:
had to take a second look… Looks good
Nice fitment. Normaly you want diagonals to tie in above the drivers head. I just cut a cage out of a corvette last week for having the rear bars like yours (as well as many other unsafe things). I don’t like when they are mounted to another tube in a shear angle to the mounting point. Tubing is only strong in one direction. You cant put a load input into the side of a tube and expect it to hold up. Just like the little triangle idea going to the seat belt brace. It won’t take much for that seat belt brace to be bent upward right at that tubes mounting point. Especially after that whole area is heat effected by the weld. SCCA, NASA, and almost any other road racing santioning body require a diagonal in the plane of the main hoop to be one piece going from the passenger floor to above the drivers head. The seat belt brace must be two piece and notched to fit in.
All in all, thats some good clean work. Just a bit excessive and poorly designed.
thanks for the constructive criticism. there are some things i would like to change with it. the diagonals and the rear section are both things i was looking at. if you have any other suggestions let me know.
Wow, I like your attitude. Alot of people come unglued when somone critiques their work. Who is your instructor? If you looking for saftey as your main concern then I would simplify the A pillar bars. Bends in tubing are failure points. Do you have any close ups where they come past the dash brace?
Here is one we did for a 2nd gen. Its a Chromo minimalist drag cage. I like having my rear bars meet the main hoop directly behind the A bars. I also like making the A bars one piece instead of a halo hoop. Thats just my preference though.
And one a little closer to finished. We hole saw the dash and put the A pillar bars threw first. The slide it into place and swind the A bars onto the main hoop. Sounds alot easier than it really is.
