Lazylaser's 97 talon

Lazylaser’s DSM journey race video’s in post #18
I started with a 91 fwd Plymouth Laser that I bought at a police auction for about $680. It was more of a go-cart than a car. In the beginning I had some trouble getting it to make the power that I was looking for. After finding the cams were 180* out, all the upgrades that were piled on the car really Woke up. These big power gains now created traction issues that even, polyurethane mounts , suspension, an LSD and good rubber couldn’t solve.

here is a video of the 1g from this year

The TRE (team rip) transmission was a pile of shit from the time I got it, it ended up being the weakest link and the LSD exploded on rt 28

Luckily I was prepared; I had already Bought an AWD 97 talon tsi that was being prepped for a heart transplant.

Whoever owned the car before me slapped a boost controller and an evo 16g on the 100% stock car and Knocked the rod bearings from the 7 bolt into the bottom of the oil pan.
After about a month of wrenching on the car my friends from I transformed it into the car I wanted,

98,000 talon tsi,
6-bolt swap, balance shafts removed, ARP rodbolts, headstuds, and turbo bolts, b/c 272’s cams and springs and titanium retainers
dsmlink, gm 3” maf and translator
slowboy fmic and piping, 63mm throttle body
pte 780cc injectors, aeromotive afpr, walbro Hp 255 and 6an from tank to rail.
Ebay 3” turboback stainless steel exhaust
Aem uego w/b, autometer C2 boost, egt, fuel pressure and oil pressure
Act2600 and fidenza aluminum flywheel.
Evo16g that I spent days porting, 38mm w/g with opendump, sbr cast manifold and 2g ported o2
Magnacore wires and ngk plugs
And other things like s.s. clutch and brake lines and a 2600cfm fan, a lot of things have been relocated (like the battery) or removed (like the A/C) , I’m sure I’m forgetting other stuff.
Future plans are, coilovers, big brakes and meth injection.
If your ever in need of any dsm parts I have piles of them in my garage.

UPDATES on Page 4

looking good so far.

looks good. might want to reconsider the clutch/flywheels set up though. that set up is really rough on a transmission. might want to consider a dual plate set up. costs a little bit more but will save you in the long run.

I did go with the street disk, you wont find me ever running a puck style clutch

I’ll see how well it works out, It was between the 2600 and the 2900 but I do drive on rt 28 in traffic all the time so I wanted something streetable,

the dual plate set up wasnt bad for the power and streetability but it was $1200 compared to the $550 that the flywheel and clutch set me back.

From the brief time I saw it at Sunoco it looked good. What troubles were you having there? Sorry I didn’t stop and chat more, I was on an emergency brake fluid run for a friend. Nice meetin’ ya.

I was supprised with how clean you kept your car, I have to say I was impressed.
I wasen’t having any problems, We were just tweeking the fuel trims and waiting for the ecu to update to make sure what we changed was either helping or hurting.

act2600 and street disk is nowhere harsh on a dsm. its probably one of the most streetable clutch setups for the power it can hold. My first street disk help up to untold amounts of punishment and launches. when it was wore almost out of spec there were minimal heat marking and such. I just threw a new disk on with the old pressure plate and its just as good as brand new.

I’ve run 2900’s and 3200’s without problems with bearing wear. It’s hard on the synchros in higher RPMs tho, but Ben isn’t building a race car.

Lookin good man, you down for hanging out sunday night wiht a BBQ and a fire?

I ran a 2600 on my 90 when I had it, if anything I may go 2100 this time around on my 91. But I’m not messing with the clutch until I smoke the stocker. I’m doing a head install and BS removal right now.

Anyone want to come over and work on it…? haha

97 is looking good man. Is the Laser getting junked now?

^^ Since no one ever helped me (except Tony) when I asked, I don’t help anyone anymore :P:P

checked out the car yesterday. was a nice acquisition.
good luck with the tuning

Spoolinsteve and T70_Tsi I couldn’t agree more, The act 2600 is one of the smoothest engaging clutches I’ve ever run. I would say that it’s the street disk that makes it that way. I’m happy with it and would recommend it for any dsmer in the <300 >400 hp range.

As for being harder on the syncros, I’m going to be revving to 7500 or 8000 rpm only on track days and then shifted into gear with my “NO Lift To Shift” at 6500 rpm, all other times its going to be driven just like a normal street car, so like Kurt said “I’m not building a race car” and can’t justify spending race car money on a twin disk.

beat90tsi, my stock clutch in the 91 lasted 3 pulls, and then exploded…just like everything else eventually did in the tre tranny. And yes the laser has been parted out and is headed for the scrap yard.

Kurt I’m down for a fire, I can finally give you back your fender that you airbrushed. Do you want the hood off of the laser as a canvas?

Jeff, the exhaust tweaking is better than anything I could have hoped for, your s.s. welding skills have made my last couple projects possible, thanks!

No more projects right now lolz.

Looks like tomorrow isnt’ going to happen, I can’t find wood that is going to dry in time because of the rain. We might go fishing tho if you’d want to still come up this way.

JUst got tint @ FBA
50% on the fronts, 35% ont the back three. Way darker than I thought it would be, pictures to come soon. Happy with the price and quality of work.
