need to find a locksmith locally who can cut a BMW key
they cant… they want to order the key precut which is ~240 bux… i got the blank on ebay for 35 bux
if you have the blank y can you now go to like abc or anywhere and just have them cut it ??

only bmw has the info to mill and the key is not “precut”. All info is stored on file. They cut the key in house at the BMW Factory and ship it out already coded. I don’t know of anybody who has a trace program to mill an existing pattern… not saying it doesn’t exist, but haven’t heard of it.
Even if you got somebody to mill it, you’d still be paying money to have it programmed.
it’s CNC’d and has a chip embeded. the BMW Factory is the only one capable of doing both at the same time. I had a key go bad and it was replaced under warranty. I had a new key the next day, overnighted from Germany.

The key can be cut at anyplace with the mill to do so. as long as you give them a key to copy this can be done. there are several posts on e46 fanatics about it. And i did it with my audi key.
The trasponder in the key can be synced to the car @ the dealership. It does not have to be done in germany.
Again BMW dealers do not have the key milling machine to machine blank keys so they always order their keys from BMW germany. But with a blank key any locksmith can do it (if they have the right mill) and the key just has to be taken to the dealer to be synced to the car
i edited before you posted. You didn’t state in your original post that you have the key, i assumed you lost it.
i have one key that works (keyless doesnt but that was my mistake trying to program my other key)
so it will start the car etc. but i wanted a spare key
since i am installing the OEM alarm this weekend i figure i can knock out 2 birds with one stone and get everything working the way it is suppposed to
so really just opening up the yellow pages and calling everyone is the only way to go …have fun today

audi key was done @ northtown Vw… they wont do a BMW key(i asked), but the method is still the same
If you want to be a baller BMW driver, go pay the lousy 240 and be done with it.
